[01:48] <grogbot> <PurpleMoustache> Which Ultima games are being worked on? Figure I could pick them up during this GOG sale
[02:04] <grogbot> <mduggan> I'm doing some work on U8, it's pretty playable but a bit buggy. There's also support for U1, U6, and the worlds of ultima ones - savage-empire/martian-dreams, but I haven't played them so not sure what status is. The worlds of ultima ones are free on gog, so even better.
[02:09] <dreammaster> u1 is still a work in progress, and not yet completable. I'm also working on porting over the xu4 project for Ultima 4
[02:18] <Lightkey> Oh but have you designed a splash screen for your own Ultima engine yet? ;-)
[02:19] <dreammaster> No. But if/when I finish it and add support for an enhanced mode using U6 graphics, it'd be nice to get some assistence to redesign the title castle screen with VGA graphics. :)

[14:48] <grogbot> <antoniou79> There is a special channel for ScummVM GSoC applicants here: #scummvm-gsoc
[14:49] <grogbot> <antoniou79> As far as I know as a start you should read our wiki pages for developers: https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Developer_Central
[14:50] <grogbot> <Henke37> here on discord that is.
[14:51] <grogbot> <antoniou79> Ah, yeah. The channel is on Discord. I failed to notice you were on IRC
[14:51] <grogbot> <antoniou79> Also this page seems particularly important to read: https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?title=Summer_of_Code/Project_Rules
[14:52] <grogbot> <antoniou79> and this main one: https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?title=Summer_of_Code
[14:53] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> https://google.github.io/gsocguides/student/ This is also great as a starting guide to GSoC in general
[14:55] <grogbot> <antoniou79> And to join the ScummVM Discord server you can use this link: https://discord.gg/ReGSkVs
[14:57] --> aryanrawlani_28 joined #scummvm.
[15:00] <grogbot> <Henke37> we should pin that in the irc channel. OH wait, irc doesn't do pinned messages.
[15:01] <Strangerke> also, I have no idea why we have a gsoc channel on discord. But that's another topic, I guess
[15:01] <grogbot> <Henke37> because we get to have as many channels as we like?
[15:01] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> Why do many people prefer irc over apps like discord or slack? seems to me this is great, as we readily have logs amongst many other things
[15:02] <Strangerke> Oh, just like on IRC. Great.
[15:02] <-- aryanrawlani_28 left irc: Quit: Leaving
[15:02] <-- medo left irc: Ping timeout: 240 seconds
[15:03] <grogbot> <antoniou79> Discord is better than Slack because of the logs thing (Slack as far as I know charges for old logs and that sucks)
[15:04] <grogbot> <antoniou79> Discord vs IRC for me is a personal preference issue (and Discord has probably more reachability to gaming community these days) -- but you'll find people with stronger opinions
[15:05] <grogbot> <Henke37> IRC is a mess that never really got standardized. it can't evolve because there is noone in charge of it.
[15:05] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> Yeah when I first saw organizations on GSoC, everyone listed only ircs and emails as a place of contact
[15:06] <Strangerke> Those were the good days...
[15:06] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> Its nice that guys have setup the bot to relay info both ways tho
[15:07] <Strangerke> I agree. It was mandatory, to be honest
[15:07] <Strangerke> A lot of people aren't willing to install zillions of crappy closed sources client to follow their projects
[15:08] <Strangerke> I had to install Slack, Teams, Discord and Line, just because I have to follow 4 different things. GREAT! or not.
[15:09] <Strangerke> so at least bridges make it semi-bearable for those people
[15:09] <grogbot> <antoniou79> At least Discord and Slack (and Mattermost!) have web clients so nothing to install really if you don't want that hassle
[15:10] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> yeah and communication via phones is so easy
[15:10] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> I have yet to find a proper irc client on android, everything is messy there
[15:11] <zleap> grogbot, is it possible to add #scummvm-gsoc to your website so people doing GSoC know where to come i think that would help people send people to the right place too
[15:11] <grogbot> <antoniou79> I was using Yaaic -- probably by searching Play Store.
[15:11] <Strangerke> zleap: no, they are supposed to come on the public channel on IRC, not somewhere random on whatever closed source tool
[15:11] <grogbot> <antoniou79> zleap: It is mentioned on the news article
[15:11] <zleap> ah np
[15:12] <grogbot> <antoniou79> https://www.scummvm.org/
[15:12] <grogbot> <rootfather> The gsoc channel is not mirrored to discord, so thats not recommended.
[15:12] <grogbot> <antoniou79> https://www.scummvm.org/news/20200222/
[15:12] <grogbot> <rootfather> Best practice is to just use Discord 🙂
[15:12] <Strangerke> or not.
[15:12] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> Thats even better
[15:13] <Strangerke> I don't get proper notification on discord, because of all the noise it generates. So I guess I won't have a student this year because thanks to discord I won't notice them
[15:13] <Strangerke> but that's perfect, I guess
[15:13] <zleap> there are webclients for IRC e.g kiwi
[15:14] <Strangerke> And Dreammaster won't have a student because Discord is fucked up on his home computer. Still perfect, I guess
[15:14] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> lol
[15:14] <grogbot> <antoniou79> Did he try the web client?
[15:15] <Strangerke> We'll ask him when he wakes up
[15:15] <LePhilousophe> yet another instant messaging protocol war :/
[15:16] <grogbot> <antoniou79> eh, I think the conversation is normal for now.
[15:16] <grogbot> <medo> uhmm hello guys i have looked at the organization and i'm going to make a proposal there, should i do something before that?
[15:16] <Strangerke> LePhilousophe: I just wanted to stop the IRC bashing, no worries. Enough people are using both communication ways to mke them permanent
[15:17] <grogbot> <antoniou79> @medo, yes, read the https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?title=Summer_of_Code
[15:17] <grogbot> <antoniou79> and all the linked content
[15:18] <grogbot> <medo> ok thank you
[15:18] <LePhilousophe> Strangerke: I wasn't saying that for you
[15:19] <Strangerke> LePhilousophe: you should have. I was the troll :P
[15:19] <LePhilousophe> but I always see Discord users pushing hard advocacy for their software
[15:19] <grogbot> <SupSuper> @Strangerke the protocol bashing is the most activity we get 😛
[15:19] <grogbot> <rootfather> Right.
[15:19] <grogbot> <rootfather> 😁
[15:19] <grogbot> <SupSuper> but it might be worth toning down during gsoc to not confuse new users
[15:19] <grogbot> <rootfather> Lets just switch over to mailing lists again 😛
[15:19] <Strangerke> SupSuper: I'm spending far more time doing things and rolling them back :D
[15:20] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> > Lets just switch over to mailing lists again 😛 @rootfather please no
[15:20] <LePhilousophe> @rootfather: hey mail is still something that work everywhere
[15:20] <Strangerke> LePhilousophe: Just like IRC? :D
[15:20] Action: Strangerke hides
[15:20] <LePhilousophe> Strangerke: nah IRC on mobile is a PITA
[15:20] <LePhilousophe> sorry for the language
[15:21] <Strangerke> hummmm.... a pita. Rah, now I want to eat one
[15:21] <LePhilousophe> hehe
[15:21] <grogbot> <SupSuper> at least they all share something in common, every server is 90% idlers
[15:21] <grogbot> <SupSuper> i can only assume all the important business is done in private and the rest are left to duke it out 😉
[15:22] <LePhilousophe> anyway, just tried yuzu to test my Switch build... that's an epic fail even with daily build
[15:22] <LePhilousophe> and not my build, ScummVM one
[15:22] <Strangerke> LePhilousophe: You can't stop talking about food I can't get, right? :P
[15:23] <LePhilousophe> Strangerke: you can't go outside so just code :D
[15:23] <Strangerke> just but now I want to have some yuzu juice on top of my pita. tsk.
[15:24] <grogbot> <medo> so where is the issues i should resolve with my mentors? will it be sent here instead of IRC?
[15:27] <Strangerke> medo: you can have a look at the bug tracker, it's usually a good source of issues to fix. You could also mention which task/project you are looking at, and ask questions about it (as you'll have to work on a schedule)
[15:34] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> Oh I forgot to ask, I worked on some bugs. Do I update the bugs.scummvm website with the necessary links and leave a comment?
[15:37] <grogbot> <antoniou79> I don't see why not.
[15:38] <grogbot> <antoniou79> Provided that your PR work was merged of course
[15:38] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> Yeah it's not, thats why I was asking
[15:38] <grogbot> <antoniou79> Or you have feedback for the bugs
[15:39] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> I have tried to fix them, and tested them and they passed the builds. Btw, why do clang on mac osx often have build problems?
[15:40] <grogbot> <antoniou79> That is a known issue. Some people are looking into that afaik
[15:40] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> I have seen them passing builds on linux with gcc and clang, but with osx it was often a problem. in fact, both my fixes had this issue and i had to workaround it.
[15:40] <grogbot> <antoniou79> I think it should be fine to add any new info you have on the bug cases and link to your PR there.
[15:41] <grogbot> <antoniou79> It won't hurt anyway
[15:41] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> okie
[15:41] <grogbot> <SupSuper> @aryanrawlani28 it's a travis issue, you can ignore it
[15:43] <grogbot> <aryanrawlani28> actually i think i was partly at fault for that. in my case, according to c++ conventions only a global bool is init with default values. I missed out on doing that for both times, and when i init them manually it passed for clang osx

[18:51] <grogbot> <xesf> @PurpleMoustache that seems a huge library 🙂
[18:52] <grogbot> <PurpleMoustache> it is!
[18:55] <grogbot> <xesf> Is or library public? Wandering if there was an easy way to see all scummvm supported games on GOG
[18:59] <grogbot> <PurpleMoustache> there isn't. I've had to hunt and peck through the wiki and compare through steam/gog. Some of it was easy (there was a Humble Sierra bundle not too long ago which had just about everything except Larry, and a few one-off games), some of it was tricky (extracting the files from Monkey Island SE's (and by that extension, the Double Fine remasters), and some just ran ScummVM natively (Humongous, which I grew up with)
[19:04] <grogbot> <xesf> that's bad, I can see it quick challenging to find all the games supported and find where to buy them
[19:04] <grogbot> <xesf> maybe something to ask GOG to have a specific public library tagged as scummvm
[19:04] <grogbot> <xesf> I am pretty sure they will profit from that, and more people will buy those games

[21:00] <grogbot> <antoniou79> And as long as I am daydreaming, maybe add an optional checkbox to donate a percentage of the purchase to the ScummVM project

[21:09] <grogbot> <PurpleMoustache> Oh, and I guess I also dont have every wintermute game, but since thats not officially in yet, I dont count them
[21:11] <grogbot> <xesf> looks like GOG allows you to toggle your game library to public
[21:11] <grogbot> <xesf> if you tag the games as SCUMMVM, guess we have a good list there 🙂
[21:13] <grogbot> <PurpleMoustache> The problem is quite a few of those games run on DOSBox or are in strange GOG archive files, so while I could tag all of them, not all the games actually use ScummVM out of the box. You have to do some work to pull the files out
[21:14] <grogbot> <xesf> I guess that's fine
[21:14] <grogbot> <xesf> but shouldn't the gog versions be part of the game detection?
[21:18] <dreammaster> In an ideal world, but in reality it would requires changes to individual engines to detect the GOG versions specifically, and extra code to accomodate the differences. In some cases it could end up being a lot of work, if we had to reimplement the various extraction tools to access the data
[21:20] <grogbot> <xesf> fair enough

[21:30] <Strangerke> yep, it was really convenient :(
[21:34] <grogbot> <SupSuper> more interesting would be supporting the remasters, since they replaced the originals. do they still have the data files?
[21:39] <grogbot> <PurpleMoustache> The Double Fine Explorer tool found here: https://quickandeasysoftware.net/software/doublefine-explorer Allows you to open up Double Fine games own data archive file format, and pull out files. It supports all the remasters, but the files for Grim Fandango have been changed and ResidualVM does not recognize them. Theres also a tool on that same site for the Monkey SE games, which... you can do the same thing with.
[21:39] <grogbot> Broken Sword and Simon The Sorcerer have legacy versions on all platforms theyre sold on. So in effect, the remasters of games almost always have the originals
[21:44] <grogbot> <PurpleMoustache> There's also of course the Unofficial Talkie Mods of the SE Monkey games: http://gratissaugen.de/ultimatetalkies/monkey1.html, which I have an alternate "game" set up with an additional layer of mod using the "The Secret of Monkey Island: CURSED!" fan OST, a redoing of the original Monkey 1 OST in Monkey 3 style: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zebvsyYjk88
