I guess it may be worth it to use the Mac font for the Mac version of Indy3, even without implementing the whole Mac GUI: http://www.update.uu.se/~d91tan/ScummVM/indy3-mac.png [08:38] The screenshot is a bit buggy, though. At this point, it should have removed the text box, like in http://www.update.uu.se/~d91tan/ScummVM/indy3-mac-orig.png [09:03] gapan (~george@user/gapan) left irc: Ping timeout: 264 seconds [11:02] Would be feasible to implement native hires font rendering and use modern TTF equivalents in ScummVM for each game? It may improve reading, maybe even for people with eye sight issues that prefer it over TTS... [11:24] timfonic: Probably tricky. The Mac version of Loom (and Indy3, if you count the screenshot earlier) work by upscaling the graphics before drawing the text. And text is rendered one character at a time. Those fonts don't do any kerning, but a random TTF might which would complicate things further. [11:28] And of course, changing the font may cause text to be cut off if it's wider than the original font. That was one of the reasons for supporting the Mac font for Loom: https://bugs.scummvm.org/ticket/11537 [11:46] yes in a general case, using different fonts than what original used can be quite tricky. I had the case with Korean and Japanese versions of Versailles where the TTF fonts used were the ones provided by Windows. Using free alternatives wasn't the same thing... [12:18] I guess solving that stuff might require a very skilled font designer person to do a volunteer contribution, so the alternative ones might need lots of tricks. Including those Korean and japanese ones, too [13:29] TMM_ (hp@amanda.tmm.cx) left irc: Quit: https://quassel-irc.org - Chat comfortably. Anywhere. [13:29] TMM_ (hp@amanda.tmm.cx) joined #scummvm. That's not really automatically fixable. It's hard to retrofit modern rendering ideas into old engines without making substantial code alterations. It's easier, for example, to just make a more legible font for U7 than is for Exult to try and transparently substitute TTFs.
