[05:35] <eriktorbjorn> Heh. I didn't realize until now that my 11th Hour CD has a couple of Doom / Doom 2 / Heretic .WAD files: "A reproduction of the Stauf mansion". Well, I don't expect ScummVM to ever support those. :-)
[05:36] <grogbot> <antoniou79> I remember playing the Heretic one. It was fun for what it was.
[05:39] <grogbot> <trembyle> Doesn't Hopkins FBI use WAD files at some point? (This part is not implemented in ScummVM.)
[05:39] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> I think I've only played the Doom one
[05:40] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> I also remember a Duke3d level of the Stauf mansion, but I don't know if it was official or fanmade
[05:41] <grogbot> <trembyle> Is there an objective? Is Stauf a boss on the top floor?
[05:41] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> I don't remember, I was like maybe 8 years old lol
[05:43] <grogbot> <antoniou79> I don't remember either. I kind of want to say the Heretic wad was empty and they took some liberties with the mansion map (how rooms connect, since for some that is not very obvious from the game proper anyway).
[05:43] <grogbot> <antoniou79> But it was free roaming so... fun
[05:44] <eriktorbjorn> Having played 11th Hour, I can easily see how someone would think a shotgun would improve the game immensely...
[05:44] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> lol
[05:47] <grogbot> <antoniou79> I finished that game by myself, although I don't know if it counts when for most barring maybe one or two of the word games/ riddles I used the full help that eventually revealed what you had to find
[05:47] <grogbot> <trembyle> @Die4Ever is Tender Loving Care any good? Or is it even so bad it's good?
[05:48] <grogbot> <SupSuper> it's... something
[05:48] <grogbot> <eientei> @eriktorbjorn yeah, I remember seeing those ages ago
[05:50] <eriktorbjorn> trembyle: I've never played it myself, but I've heard there isn't really much of a game there.
[05:50] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> I haven't played TLC
[05:51] <grogbot> <antoniou79> I think it's kind of experimental gameplay. I've only ever watched a playthrough of it.
[05:51] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> but if you want an idea of how much of a game it is, they ported it to DVD for DVD Players, inside the movie menu type interface
[05:52] <grogbot> <antoniou79> Sort of what one would call walking simulator these days, but with maybe a bit more interactivity
[05:52] <eriktorbjorn> Die4Ever: On the other hand, that happened to a couple of Humongous Entertainment games as well.
[05:52] <grogbot> <SupSuper> i saw someone play it and yeah it's mostly FMV. it's really mature for the first half, and completely bonkers by the second half
[05:52] <grogbot> <djsrv> lol i forgot DVD 'games' were a thing
[05:52] <grogbot> <djsrv> those were terrible
[05:52] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> I'm gonna have to play it sometime
[05:53] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> oh yea and they ported the DVD game back to Windows for the Steam release, that release doesn't use Groovie
[05:53] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> I've heard it actually works well
[05:53] <grogbot> <antoniou79> I had fun with Viacom's Dracula game, which was also ported to DVD at some point
[05:53] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> probably some standardized software that runs DVDs packaged up
[05:56] <grogbot> <djsrv> when is ScummVM getting a DVD engine
[05:57] <eriktorbjorn> I have two of those Humongous Entertainment DVD games: Freddi Fish 2 and Pajama Sam 3. Apparently there was one for Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo as well.
[05:57] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> I was thinking about that lol, no reason why scummvm couldn't run dvds
[06:01] <eriktorbjorn> +
[06:01] <eriktorbjorn> Oops.
[06:02] <eriktorbjorn> I wonder if the CD-ROM version of Tender Loving Care is copy-protected. Linux claims the first CD contains 1.2 GB of files, and fails to copy one of them (tlcenabl.dat)

[06:27] <grogbot> <eientei> Scratch/marked?
[06:28] <grogbot> <eientei> I've got a Shrek 2 DVD game that features a live action John Cleese
[06:28] <eriktorbjorn> eientei: Not that I can see. The box was shrink-wrapped until this morning. But I have at least one other game where the CD has impossibly large files, and that was because of copy protection.
[06:29] <grogbot> <eientei> iirc there's software to tell you what copy protection the CD uses
[06:30] <grogbot> <Seri> Who here actually has a copy of UHP or Groovie TLC?
[06:32] <grogbot> <Seri> I'm curious if/when two script variables get set within those games for the engine

[06:33] <eriktorbjorn> Seri: I have Tender Loving Care (CD-ROM and DVD-ROM versions) and Uncle Henry's Playhouse, but I doubt I could answer any technical questions. At least not without a *lot* of help.
[06:37] <grogbot> <Seri> Could I trouble you to run both games, then use the Scummvm in-game debugger to test var 0x8C and 0x8D? I believe should be 0 in the main menu before a game at the intro menu and hopefully one or both will be non-zero after the user is given control after starting a new save slot
[06:39] <eriktorbjorn> eientei: That's one seriously ugly program that I can't figure out how to use (and I don't know if it works correctly in Wine anyway).
[06:39] <grogbot> <Seri> Ctrl+Alt+D to bring up the debugger, 'mem 0x8C' and 'mem 0x8D' for the vars
[06:40] <grogbot> <eientei> Ah yeah, right, Linux
[06:40] <eriktorbjorn> eientei: I do have access to a Windows computer, but that one doesn't have a CD drive.
[06:42] <grogbot> <eientei> Probably best to make an iso or bin/cue of the disc and go from there
[06:43] <eriktorbjorn> Seri: The DVD-ROM version of TLC isn't detected (and probably wouldn't work because of the .VOB video files?), but the CD-ROM version starts. I just have to wait for John Hurt to shut up.
[06:44] <eriktorbjorn> Seri: Ok, I'm at the first set of questions. Those variables are still 0.
[06:47] <eriktorbjorn> Oh good, it looks like you can skip movies (right-click). Now I'm at an interactive section. 0x8D is 0x43 and 0x8C is 0x38.
[06:48] <grogbot> <Seri> Cool, thanks
[06:50] <eriktorbjorn> Seri: Uncle Henry doesn't seem to set those vairables, though. But from what I understand, there's no walking around in that game. Just picking puzzles from a menu screen.
[06:51] <grogbot> <Seri> Does it have game saves?
[06:51] <eriktorbjorn> Seri: I think so. It said something about solved puzzles being saved automatically.
[06:51] <eriktorbjorn> Seri: And you start by entering a name.
[06:52] <grogbot> <Seri> Hmm. Will have to go find some YouTube videos I think
[06:52] <grogbot> <Seri> Thanks
[06:53] <eriktorbjorn> Heh. It has some advertisements for upcoming games: the "highly interactive" Tender Loving Care, and something called "Dog Eat Dog" that I've never even heard of.
[06:55] <eriktorbjorn> Ah, it was cancelled.

[07:36] <eriktorbjorn> The other TLC CDs have the expected amount of data, so I'm going with probable copy protection. Hopefully not a file that ScummVM needs.
[07:36] <eriktorbjorn> And of course, that version doesn't have as good movie quality as the DVD-ROM version anyway.
[07:43] <grogbot> <eientei> Make a tool to convert the DVD-quality movies from the DVD-ROM version to the CD version format
[07:46] <Scummette> [scummvm] sev- closed pull request #3371: EVENTRECORDER: don't show the splash screen if event recorder is active (master...pr/eventrecorder-splashscreen) https://git.io/JuNpY
[07:51] <eriktorbjorn> eientei: I don't know what format that is, and the DVD movies (at least when played in a standalone media player) are 740x480 pixels. (Well, not quite since they are letter-boxed within that window, but still...)
[07:51] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> Converting them would lose quality
[07:52] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> But we could make ScummVM valuable of using the DVD's VOB files on top of the Groovie version of the game
[07:53] <grogbot> <eientei> Do the VOBs have copy-protection on them?
[07:53] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> I don't think DVDs had copy protection?
[07:53] <eriktorbjorn> eientei: I don't remember encountering any problems when I copied the DVD to my hard disk.
[07:54] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> If they do then a user would be able to easily get around it anyways
[07:54] <grogbot> <eientei> Right, but it may have protection in the encoding of the VOB
[07:54] <eriktorbjorn> eientei: And what little I've watched of them in MPlayer seemed to work fine.
[07:55] <grogbot> <eientei> With or without the DVD-ROM in the drive?
[07:56] <grogbot> <eientei> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VOB#Copy_protection
[07:57] <eriktorbjorn> eientei: Without.
[07:57] <grogbot> <Die4Ever> Easily defeated though
[08:00] <grogbot> <eientei> @eriktorbjorn all good then
[08:00] <eriktorbjorn> One thing that struck me as funny is that the DVD-ROM is one of those "flipper discs", i.e. you have to turn it over to get to the second half. Maybe it's cheaper to manufacture that way? On the other end of the spectrum, I have a budget re-release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade / Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis which is two CDs, one for each game.
