[07:31] Action: eriktorbjorn sighs. The version of Phantasmagoria that GOG sells is still slightly broken, and they just don't seem to care.

[08:12] <eriktorbjorn> Endy: The problem seems to be that the audio files from the individual CDs have been merged in such a way that some sounds were lost. E.g. when you examine the photo of your rat in your office cubicle. ScummVM shows a subtitle instead of playing an audio clip.
[08:14] <eriktorbjorn> I had a lengthy discussion with their support two years ago, but they claim they can't do anything about it, and that there is probably some technical or legal problem preventing them. I would very much like to see the part of their contract that says "Now, remember: The game absolutely *has* to be subtly broken, or else!"
[08:15] <eriktorbjorn> So just to be a pain, I filed a request for a refund earlier today, even though they'll probably refuse it because it's been just a tiny bit more than 30 days. But I figured maybe this will finally send the bug report to someone less obtuse.
[08:17] <eriktorbjorn> What really annoys me is that we've gotten at least two bug reports for Phantasmagoria 2 because of this, and in both it's been noted that GOG has been informed about the problem.
[08:25] <Endy> eriktorbjorn: Heh, I was just reading your old GOG forum thread about this from '18... Yeah, being bundled as the modern engine is pretty painful for the project when they've mangled the game resources
[08:27] <Endy> While it seems a little dodgy, since it's been ignored for so long I suspect you may be right that the refund request will draw a bit more attention to it. It's certainly the more reliable "escalation path" as far as those things go heh
[08:28] <Endy> Best guess is that "this is the game data as provided to us, what more do you want" will be the problem... getting fixed resources files probably dependant on a external contractor or somesuch :/
[08:29] <eriktorbjorn> Well, I've been pretty disappointed with their support the last times I've contacted them anyway. +
[08:31] <eriktorbjorn> Someone reported on their forum that Zork III crashed. Actually, what happens is that in some instances the game quits to DOS when you're killed. Usually you would still have been able to see the final text but GOG configures it so that DOSBox also quits when the game ends. I suggested adding a "pause" so that the user would have to press a key for DOSBox to finish. Then I reported it as a bug. GOG's response? They pointed me to m
[08:31] <eriktorbjorn> workaround!
[08:32] <eriktorbjorn> And then we have Zork: Grand Inquisitor, where they upgraded the game to the DVD version. But they never bothered to upgrade ScummVM to a version that can play the hi-res movies...
[08:33] <grogbot> <_Bnu> Is it one of those Activision GOG releases or something? (Phantasmagoria, that is.)
[08:33] <eriktorbjorn> _Bnu: Probably. It says "Sierra / Activision" under on the store page for Phantasmagoria 2.
[08:35] <eriktorbjorn> I don't know if the Steam release is the same.
[08:36] <grogbot> <_Bnu> IIRC they tend to be somewhat of a mess, I remember Gabriel Knight having like a bunch of Gabriel Knight 2 files in the folder and missing an executable at one point, haha.
[08:39] <grogbot> <_Bnu> But I guess it might be that GOG aren't allowed to muck around with the package contents and no one at Activision cares to fix it.
[08:41] <Endy> Being referred back to your OWN post on a workaround is infuriating :P
[08:42] <Endy> GOG used to be the distributor that cared
[08:42] <Endy> but then again, Valve used to release games :P
[08:56] <grogbot> <antoniou79> Honestly, I'd use twitter or direct gmail contact with them.
[08:57] <grogbot> <antoniou79> Ultimately it's about playing the best version of the game, in the best way available, so it's to their benefit too, certainly.
[08:57] <grogbot> <antoniou79> In my (short) experience, the forums are not very active as far as official support goes. Not after a few weeks post-release.
[08:58] <grogbot> <antoniou79> In the case for Blade Runner, we had contacts available via gmail, since they contacted us first, and we managed to resolve some issues relatively quickly. But those were not bugs with the resources.
[09:00] <grogbot> <antoniou79> My pet peeve of course with them is not offering any other version of LOOM other than the (horribly botched) CD Talkie one
[09:01] <grogbot> <antoniou79> It's more of clear cut licensing thing probably, but still, it's a "crime"

[09:48] <eriktorbjorn> The Loom situation is a bit sad, because Brian Moriarty has stated more than once that the EGA version is his preferred version, even when it comes to the graphics. He mentioned the first room, where the colours are made so that the last leaf on the tree stands out, and how that gets a bit lost in the 256-colour versions. (Though I guess the PC-Engine version has that too, at least for that scene.)

[15:39] <grogbot> <rsn8887> If you look closely at gog.com game release bundles, they are quite chaotic in general. At least the ones for MacOS. Sometimes there are dosbox configs for other, completely different games, in there, sometimes the cd audio is only in lossy compressed form etc.
[15:40] <grogbot> <rsn8887> Their dosbox sound setting choices are sometimes questionable as well.
[15:40] <grogbot> <rsn8887> Often there is only an installed version of the game, but not the installers themselves.
[15:41] <grogbot> <rsn8887> I am not sure how they do the ScummVM releases. Do they bundle original game executables/installers, too, or only the datafiles that ScummVM needs? What are their default ScummVM settings for Midi/OPL and do they allow users to change all settings?
[15:43] <grogbot> <rsn8887> Do they bundle original soundfiles, or lossy mp3/ogg converted ones?
[15:43] <grogbot> <Henke37> I get the impression that they have no standard.
[15:53] --> ny00123 joined #scummvm.
[16:13] <grogbot> <antoniou79> For ScummVM releases, at least in the Blade Runner case and a few others I've checked (eg. LOOM, Beneath a Steel Sky, Broken Sword), it's just the data files and a ScummVM build (and the ScummVM source code zipped). No original executable or installer. They have their own installer of course to set this up on your PC , which arguably is better than trying to run an old installer. And also the Galaxy client option.
[16:14] <grogbot> <antoniou79> In general they offer a pre-configured ScummVM ini for the game. You have to edit that if you want something different or exit the game while playing to the ScummVM launcher (but few people know to do that I think)
[16:14] <grogbot> <PurpleMoustache> I do what I imagine most dont which is pull all those files into a big directory and just use a more updated build of ScummVM
[16:15] <grogbot> <antoniou79> Yeah, that's probably the best way to deal with ScummVM supported games. I don't know how often GOG updates the ScummVM builds, but it's not whenever we provide a new official build

[18:46] <grogbot> <SupSuper> it's hard to tell which games are maintained by GOG and which are maintained by the publisher. i suspect in most cases it's the latter, specially if they're also on steam
[18:48] <Dominus> I suspect it's mostly GOG
[18:48] <Dominus> especially when DOSBox is involved.
[18:49] <Dominus> they used Boxer for their macOS releases for ages but switched to DOSBox because of its "overlay" mount that they can use for saves in the cloud
[18:50] <grogbot> <SupSuper> true, all the steam releases are still windows-only
[18:52] <Deledrius> Sometimes they seem to get updates if ScummVM has a fix for something relevant to the game, but it's not universal. I just use my own copy of ScummVM to play them anyway.
[18:55] <grogbot> <SupSuper> i guess if you're feeling lucky you can try contacting activision support 😛

[19:10] <grogbot> <antoniou79> I see that I tried to run the game from the Steam library (which uses DosBox) and then run it with ScummVM. They both had this issue (which is expected since it's an issue with the data files they distribute)
