[00:04] <grogbot> [discord] <plantedwave5190> I noticed a bug in the 2.8.1 Wii port of ScummVM, when playing Freddi Fish 2. The cursor disappears when you click on the safety scissors to equip them from your inventory on the bottom of the screen.
[00:04] <grogbot> [discord] <plantedwave5190> For example, I was doing a playthrough when I need to get the helmet for the trap, and when I equip the scissors, the cursor icon disappeared, so I'm flying blind, unless I bring up the menu (with the HOME Button) or the virtual keyboard (D-pad down).

[00:12] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> @plantedwave5190 : Does this happen with the Win32 desktop port?
[00:14] <-- _marc` left irc: Ping timeout: 246 seconds
[00:14] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> @plantedwave5190 : In either case, please file that as a bug on bugs.scummvm.org
[00:26] <grogbot> [discord] <plantedwave5190> I haven't given it a try yet.
[00:28] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> Then please do before filing as a bug against the Wii. It will be a lot easier to debug if it is replicable on a desktop port. If not, we can but it is more problematic

[00:46] <grogbot> [discord] <chrisis123> This bug https://bugs.scummvm.org/ticket/14630 is still not fixed so 3DS port definitely is not releasa
[00:46] <grogbot> [discord] <chrisis123> This bug https://bugs.scummvm.org/ticket/14630 is still not fixed in nightlies so 3DS port definitely is not releasable right now (classic UI works though) (edited)
[00:48] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> @chrisis123 : Thank you for indicating the blocker... without 3DS hardware, this is hard to replicate...
[00:48] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> If I built some test builds using the https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?title=Compiling_ScummVM/Docker toolchain, would you be prepared to test with them?

[00:52] <grogbot> [discord] <chrisis123> Probably not today as it's far too late here and I need to go to bed already 🙂 But I'd be happy to test them of course (if they're any different than the buildbot builds)
[00:52] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> This would take around 16 builds to be tested to nail this down...
[00:52] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> No problem. Poke me another day.... I will try to do the first three builds i.e. latest master, v2.7.0 and first bisection point to test...
[00:52] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> ready for you then
[00:53] <grogbot> [discord] <chrisis123> Yeah of course I'll try to remember it tomorrow 🙂 (I'm in Europe CEST timezone...)
[00:54] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> I am in BST i.e. GMT+1 ... though my personal timezone varys 🙂
[00:55] <grogbot> [discord] <plantedwave5190> I noticed what caused the bug to occur. The transparency on the cursors are screwed.
[00:57] <-- _marc` left irc: Ping timeout: 268 seconds
[00:59] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> I would first see if you can replicate on Win32 ... There was an issue with that which I helped to get a fix applied for... but if that is Wii specific, it may need further work
[01:09] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> I would also then check to see if this occurs in v2.8.0 and v2.7.0 i.e. is this a regression... but that needs a new bug filed as there is no bug for this listed in the tracker. I checked

[03:05] <grogbot> [discord] <plantedwave5190> I updated the Windows port to 2.8.1, and fired up a few games, and I do not notice the transparency issues with the cursors.
[03:09] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> @plantedwave5190 : Please test with a nightly build from https://buildbot.scummvm.org/#/dailybuilds ... I suspect the issue is fixed in v2.9.0git as I think the fixes may be past the v2.8.0 branch point and were not backported
[03:10] <grogbot> [discord] <hax0kartik> This bug does not occur if the proper version of freetype2 is used(mentioned in the readme)
[03:11] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> @hax0kartik Could you add that note to the bug please? If you don't have a github account to do that. I can
[03:12] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> v2.8.0 branched on 2023-12-16

[03:14] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> Hmm... The WII cursor palette fix went in on 2023-10-02 so should be included in the v2.8.0 and v2.8.1 builds for Wii 😐
[03:16] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> @hax0kartik Just that stuff chatted about here will not be remembered, but put the note on the bug and we should deal ... It may require someone to make sure the version of freetype for 3DS is correct.

[03:28] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> Thanks, you should add the detail to the bug i.e.
[03:28] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> "At the moment of writing, the version of freetype2 packaged by devkitPro has an issue where it allocates too much data on the stack when ScummVM loads GUI themes. As a workaround, an older version can be used. Version 2.6.5 is known to work well. The instructions below can be used to compile it."
[03:29] <grogbot> [discord] <hax0kartik> cool, let me do thaat
[03:29] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> That will explain why this is... and may help in a possible fix to avoid getting stuck on older version of Freetype i.e. we can create patch and maybe send it to upstream for Freetype

[15:05] <grogbot> [discord] <clefthemouse> This is kind of a random question, but does anyone know of any way to have a certain piece of data from a game running in ScummVM to be dynamically (as it changes) output to a text file, that I could then have OBS read off of?
[15:05] <grogbot> [discord] <clefthemouse> Basically my Big Idea is to stream King's Quest 6, and have my current points total updating dynamically on screen, which I think would look really slick :Thonk:
[15:11] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> @clefthemouse : ScummVM is open source so you could patch the code to output that to log and parse for that value... but if you mean out of the box, no that functionality is far too niche
[15:13] <grogbot> [discord] <Digitall> KQ6 is running under the SCI engine. You would need to work out which variable in the engine is holding the points (The SCI engine is very much scripted, not hard coded so that depends on the game script code) and then print that value with debug output...

[18:15] <grogbot> [discord] <caffeinenyc> Wow, what a small world! First and foremost, THANK YOU THANK YOU for contributing that engine. I bought the CD a long, long time ago but never played it. I didn't count on the fact that the game wouldn't be playable on WinXP, which was frustrating because according to the trailers, it seemed like a pretty awesome game / digital novel.
[18:15] <grogbot> [discord] <caffeinenyc> My 9 year old daughter has been watching Star Trek:TNG and saw Piccard as Dixon Hill. I mentioned that Dixon was a style of detective called "Hard Boiled Detective" and the genre was called "noir". She asked what noir was and I thought of this game. Did a little Googling, and lo and behold, discovered the ScummVM played it! Wow!!!!!!!!! After all these years...
[18:15] <grogbot> [discord] <caffeinenyc> So I went to an abandonware site and downloaded it since I haven't owned the disk in over a decade. Maybe two decades. I tried it, and got this:

[18:15] <grogbot> [discord] <caffeinenyc> Not to be deterred, I went back to a bunch of abandonware sites, downloaded a whole bunch of them, and finally found one that added correctly to ScummVM, so we're going to play that game pretty soon, thanks to you!
