[02:37] <grogbot> <Zaratul> i see github commits, is Ultima 8 support beign worked on? 👀
[02:37] <grogbot> <mduggan> Yeah, it works pretty well now
[02:38] <grogbot> <Zaratul> 🙏
[02:39] <grogbot> <Zaratul> no gameplay additions i pressume? only new OS compatibility?
[02:39] <grogbot> <mduggan> There's still a few minor issues but I moved on a bit to playing with Crusader as it uses the same engine, but there's still loads of work needed to support it
[02:40] <dreammaster> Because it's in ScummVM, there are various automatic improvements, like extra save slots, and more filter & scaling options
[02:41] <grogbot> <mduggan> The biggest gameplay addition is a minimap.. I considered making it support higher res or widescreen.. I have a screenshot of U8-4k around here somewhere..
[02:42] <grogbot> <Zaratul> good job mates!
[02:43] <grogbot> <Zaratul> im playing Ultima 7 with Exult and im used to QoL fixes 🙂
[02:43] <grogbot> <mduggan> It was mostly the work of the pentagram team, I just put finishing touches on :)
[02:43] <grogbot> <mduggan> Which is unsurprisingly mostly the same team as exult
[02:45] <grogbot> <Zaratul> oh i heard about Pentagram port, didnt play it
[02:45] <grogbot> <Zaratul> its nice to see abandoned projects getting completed
[02:48] <dreammaster> Agreed. It's sad to see projects get abandoned, particularly ones that had seen a lot of progress. Even worse ones that don't share their internal work, dissasemblies, etc. so it's hard for anyone else to take over

[08:21] <grogbot> <sev> no jailbreak is required for this
[08:22] <grogbot> <sev> @Mataniko regarding vscode. Did you manage to work with ScummVM codebase with it?
[08:23] <grogbot> <sev> because regardless I do, it cannot find the includes in engines/ for me
[09:01] <grogbot> <JRE> ultima 8 and crusader use the same engine ?
[09:17] <grogbot> <mduggan> basically.. the controls and navigation are quite different, but the data formats are mostly the same and the engine code that determines how objects behave runs in the same virtual cpu
[09:18] <grogbot> <mduggan> one hard bit will be that there are 308 "intrinsic" functions which is the calls into c code from the engine code.. so far I'm pretty sure I know what 4 of them do.

[10:41] <grogbot> <criezy> The packages on our Downloads page indeed require the iPhone or iPad to be jailbroken. But other than that they work on a wide range of devices. I don't know what an iPhone Xr is, but there is a good chance it will work on it.

[16:46] <anus> ok
[16:46] <anus> i could always run older ScummVM version
[16:47] <grogbot> <SupSuper> what does scummvm need with dbus?
[16:47] <grogbot> <rootfather> dbus is used for some parts of the pulseaudio integration and the gtk3 stuff
[16:48] <grogbot> <rootfather> even though the gtk3 dialogs are not enabled on the latest stable build, I had to ship the necessary packages with it in order to provide the nightly builds on the edge channel
[16:49] <grogbot> <rootfather> in case the bug is related to snapd's "core18" in general, there's not much I can do about it
[16:49] <grogbot> <rootfather> @anus fyi, I'm co-maintaining the snap package, so we will probably read us over at the github repo
[16:49] <anus> folks how do you install older ScummVM from terminal window?
[16:50] <grogbot> <rootfather> sudo apt install scummvm
[16:50] <anus> rootfather i dont have github account and have never really filed anythign with github and i think at this point it srolly easier just to install older scummvm and be done with it heh
[16:50] <anus> ya if i install it that way it will install latest rootfather
[16:50] <grogbot> <rootfather> hm, okay... would be nice to investigate this though
[16:50] <anus> i need to install older version
[16:50] <grogbot> <rootfather> hm. that's unlikely.
[16:51] <grogbot> <rootfather> the latest one is 2.1.1. it shouldn't be in the 16.04 repo
[16:51] <anus> i need to install a really older one that worked with my OS version
[16:51] <grogbot> <rootfather> the 16.04 repos provide scummvm 1.7.0
[16:51] <anus> like going back maybe a year heh
[16:51] <anus> ya that would work..1.7.0
[16:52] <anus> software center is already at 2.x.x
[16:52] <grogbot> <rootfather> Sorry, I don't understand. The 16.04 repos are frozen. For packages like ScummVM, the version is always the same
[16:52] <grogbot> <rootfather> yes, since it's shipping the snap.
[16:52] <grogbot> <rootfather> do the following:
[16:52] <grogbot> <rootfather> "sudo snap remove scummvm"
[16:52] <grogbot> <rootfather> "sudo apt install scummvm"
[16:52] <grogbot> <rootfather> this should give you 1.7.0 from the repo
[16:52] <anus> ok
[16:52] <anus> let me try
[16:53] <grogbot> <rootfather> I suspect that the snapd package shipped with Ubuntu 16.04 is starting to decay due to it's age.
[16:53] <grogbot> <rootfather> the snap stuff is in very heavy development
[16:54] <anus> wish ubuntu software manager would let us select older versions heh
[16:54] <anus> ok scummvm removed..

[16:56] <grogbot> <rootfather> I'll see if I can replicate the issue with the snap, so I can start investigating 🙂
[16:56] <grogbot> <rootfather> maybe it's related to 16.04, maybe to 32 bit.
[16:56] <anus> btw if ubuntu ever decides to run automatic updates will scummvm refv
[16:56] <anus> thanks rootfather
[16:57] <grogbot> <rootfather> Ubuntu already does automated updates for the snaps
[16:57] <grogbot> <rootfather> and it works great 🙂
[16:57] <anus> ok
[17:00] <anus> btw on scummvm startup i do get the message in terminal window saying "WARNING: SDL mixer output buffer size: 2048 differs from desired: 4096!"
[17:01] <anus> i guess its my ddr 2gb motherboard limitation?
[17:01] <grogbot> <rootfather> I think this is related to the capabilities of your audio drivers and hardware.
[17:01] <anus> ok
[17:02] <grogbot> <rootfather> e.g. I get a message "512 differs from desired: 2048"
[17:02] <grogbot> <rootfather> but even 4096 is a quite low buffer size, so you shouldn't experience more than a couple of milliseconds of delay.
[17:02] <grogbot> <rootfather> on "slow paced" games like we support, you will most likely notice absolutely nothing 😉
[17:03] <anus> ok sweet thanks for info

[20:54] <digitall> Hi...
[20:55] <digitall> yuv422 / sev: I have issues with my copy of Blazing Dragons... Just want to be sure that there is no issue with how I dumped the PS1 CD
[20:56] <digitall> The game is detected fine... but errors() out from the first STR video from video/psx_decoder.cpp with "Corrupt PSX stream sector" ...
[20:57] <digitall> The file sizes look reasonable. I imaged the disc using cdrdao to a bin/toc and then used toc2cue to get a bin/cue ... then tried bchunk to extract the ISO image...
[20:58] <digitall> Tried in PSX mode, but the result was not readable, but worked fine in the normal ISO9600 mode and I could extract the required datafiles...
[20:58] <digitall> Any ideas? Can we pastebin and compare MD5sums of the datafiles in case my version is slightly different since UK version?
[20:58] <grogbot> <trembyle> I just did this recently. I used the free version of IsoBuster to get the PSX files.
[20:59] <grogbot> <trembyle> Though I did use the US version
[21:00] <digitall> trembyle: My bigfile.dat is 44992512 bytes with MD5 of 8e224e84aa9f8b45b68e0cce7f46d40a
[21:01] <digitall> My crystald.str is 3733504 bytes with MD5 of 2dab60c0537890a711d49d85028bc43c
[21:01] <digitall> Does that match with your version?
[21:01] <grogbot> <trembyle> checking
[21:03] <grogbot> <trembyle> No bigfile.dat is 44990464 bytes and MD5 of 04e32f16a5e2360bce4b039b5671b06d
[21:03] <grogbot> <trembyle> actually I realized I have the German one too
[21:03] <grogbot> <trembyle> in addition to US
[21:04] <grogbot> <trembyle> crystald.str is 4287696 bytes and md5 of f63c1959eacb43e3b6e8c987733d6cdf
[21:05] <digitall> Hmmm
[21:05] <digitall> Two secs.. Will see if I can identify any markings on this version indicating what variant it is
[21:06] <digitall> Ah, it was detected as "English GB" ... so it is the British variant.
[21:07] <digitall> Yep... I have got the second detection entry version... unsurprising since I am from UK :)
[21:08] <grogbot> <trembyle> The hash is different in bigfile.dat according to detection.cpp. Unless you have a different release?
[21:08] <grogbot> <trembyle> meaning, it's not the one you posted above
[21:09] <digitall> trembyle: The detection MD5 hash is limited to the first 5000 bytes by default... otherwise detection would take ages.
[21:10] <digitall> I posted the file hash which gives a more accurate view in case there is a difference after the first 5000 bytes
[21:12] <digitall> https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/blob/master/engines/dragons/detection.cpp#L42 shows these having the same MD5sum as it will be the same on the first 5000 bytes... but different
[21:12] <digitall> file sizes which differentiates the USA vs. UK editions
[21:13] <-- BeefEats left irc: Quit: Bye
[21:14] <digitall> Yep, just checked and I get the right MD5sum over just the first 5000 bytes
[21:14] <digitall> The issue anyway is in the STR media files... at least our PSX_decoder barfs on the UK version of Blazing Dragons then.
[21:15] <grogbot> <trembyle> Not sure why yours is erroring. Maybe the GB version is different?
[21:15] <grogbot> <trembyle> I can confirm that the US and German versions both play video and seem pretty playable overall.
[21:15] <digitall> The issue seems to be in the video files.
[21:16] <digitall> Is there any freely available STR video file and player? vlc and ffplay barf on my STR files as well :|
[21:16] <digitall> i.e. anything I can use as reference to try to pin down the root cause here
[21:17] <grogbot> <trembyle> I think I was using something the other day. Let me check.
[21:19] <digitall> I can find a few Windows tools freely available... was hoping for something open source with code to help here.
[21:20] <grogbot> <trembyle> https://github.com/m35/jpsxdec
[21:20] <grogbot> <trembyle> I just tried playing the STR files in there and it works.
[21:27] <digitall> Java is of course not very cross platform recently... dies in flaming bits.
[21:27] <digitall> Will end up with Win32 VM... two mins
[21:28] <digitall> ARGH... "We cant connect to the server at github-production-release-asset-2e65be.s3.amazonaws.com" :\
[21:28] <digitall> Sigh. Amazon hates me too
[21:29] <digitall> Right have got v1.02 release
[21:30] <grogbot> <trembyle> where do you find the version?
[21:31] <digitall> Github Releases... The Download button in the Markdown fails for me
[21:32] <grogbot> <trembyle> oh, I see. thought you meant v1.02 of the game
[21:43] <digitall> Still fighting to get this running
[21:44] <grogbot> <trembyle> The download button did work for me, and that gets v1.00. I didn't try any later versions.

[21:52] <digitall> Hmm... It opens and plays crystald.str from the UK version...
[21:52] <digitall> but I do get a warning "File does not have raw sector headers - audio may not be detected."
[21:52] <digitall> I wonder if that is why our PSX Decoder is choking on this file...
[21:52] Action: digitall waves at yuv422
[21:55] <grogbot> <trembyle> Hey, do you know anything about the Carmen Sandiego games in Mohawk?
[21:55] <digitall> Hmm... All the other videos from my edition of Blazing Dragons give the same warning in jpsxdec.
[21:56] <digitall> trembyle: Errm... maybe. A bit. Why?
[21:56] <grogbot> <trembyle> Do you know if ThinkQuick Challenge runs at all? I would've expected it to at least start.
[21:57] <digitall> Mohawk is a bit tricky as it isn't really a single engine, more an archive format and some middleware so each game needs a different script processor... assuming it is not mostly hardcoded
[21:58] <grogbot> <trembyle> Not sure if you were the one who worked on these. The other carmen game does start and it's a little playable.
[21:58] <grogbot> <trembyle> but not this one. Maybe it's just still WIP
[21:59] <digitall> Not me... I do have one CS game, but it is not detected and may not be Mohawk. I think that was likely to be fuzzie.
[21:59] <grogbot> <trembyle> ah, okay
[22:00] <digitall> The main supported game is "Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?" IIRC
[22:00] <digitall> Looks like Carmen Think Quick might be Livingbooks... but may be a later version.
[22:01] <grogbot> <trembyle> yeah, that one runs for me. I thought the other one might too, because it looks like he worked on the Custom Question Generator
[22:01] <grogbot> <trembyle> The wiki says they are both v5
[22:02] <digitall> Yep... detection table concurs. I think only up to V3 are well supported. The TODO list on the Wiki indicates that work was in progress on V4 scripts...
[22:03] <digitall> https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?title=Mohawk/TODO#Living_Books_TODO
[22:05] <digitall> Minor point, but fuzzie is not he :)
[22:06] <grogbot> <trembyle> Ah, no that's not THAT minor of a point. Thanks 🙂
[22:06] <digitall> Anyway, afk...
