Then I filed another bug report asking how to contact the upstreams developers, using this as an example of why I couldn't ask GOG for direct support. Within days, hey had magically fixed it. (At least it seemed to work fine when I tried it.)

For other games with pixelated sprites it's much harder. The Sierra SCI games, for example, just have moving blobs. Also, once you upgrade the LucasArts sprites the animations are too sharp and few.
