I'm working on standardizing the language codes used for supported games. Currently we only have a code for Bokmål. How likely is it that we'll find games using Nynorsk? [13:53] Good question. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some games using Nynorsk, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. [13:56] Ah, ok. I was hoping to just simplify things by using only one code for "Norwegian", assuming that it would be Bokmål. [13:56] Bokmål is the standard/default for Norwegian. [13:58] Maybe we make Bokmål the standard NO_NOR language code, and if Nynorsk is needed at some point, we'll add a separate code for it. [13:58] Out of curiosity, is this changing over time? Is Nynorsk becoming more or less common? [13:59] Unless there are any known games or any known fantranslations in Nynorsk, I'd just add NO_NO or NO_NB and leave Nynorsk out for now (until something pops up) [14:01] I'd say Nynorsk is becoming sort of ... less common. To some extent. It's still taught in schools, it's still required that all sorts of government papers, laws, and so forth are available in Nynorsk "for those who wants/needs" that. [14:02] The government funded state channel also has a set requirement for the % of subtitles and/or content that needs to be available in Nynorsk and so forth, I believe (at least they used to have that) [14:03] As far as written forms of the language goes; general idea is that Bokmål is for all intents and purposes "Norwegian". Nynorsk is a construct that leans heavily in favor of the terminology and differences found in the northern and western dialects found in Norway. [14:05] Thank you! This was very helpful 🙂 [14:05] No problem. 🙂 [14:15] Maturion (~Maturion@p200300ede72ec8003deb236cfd376b6c.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) joined #scummvm. Do you hear a lot of Norwegian where you live? [14:31] I'm also curious how close Norwegian is to Danish. [14:32] No, I hear very little I'm afraid. Though some bug reports at work are written in Norwegian. [14:34] When I was a kid, I would watch "Fleksnes fataliteter", and the aforementioned "Professor Drøvel" on TV. There was also a sci-fi miniseries called "Blindpassasjer" which seemed a lot better back then than when I re-watched it. But nowadays... not much. [14:35] (And yes, I'm from Sweden.) [14:37] I have no idea how close Norwegian and Danish are. I'm told Danish and Swedish are close, but I find it very difficult to understand spoken Danish at all. [17:55] Are there potential users who could only read Nynorsk? [17:56] No, more or less everyone can read Bokmål. But thats not he point [17:57] Equating Bokmål as the only Norwegian is something i dont like. [17:58] Basically youre trying to solve a non-problem, just use NB_NO everywhere, and NN_NO if we find one. [17:59] This isnt like the difference between EN_UK and EN_US, where an EN_ANY makes sense [18:00] And I used ZH_ANY for Return to Zork, since it doesn't contain any Chinese text (only the FMVs were translated). [18:01] Ok, point taken. We'll leave it as is and add Nynorsk when we have one. [18:01] Actually the link above might be a good one to start with. [18:40] yeah [18:40] And there are two other in between [18:41] well, we can cross that bridge when we come to it [18:41] afaik, if we're only talking about a GUI translation, then we won't need a flag for the new launcher [18:52] What I'm doing so far is; correct all strings flagged with issues, update any outdated strings, and then add missing translations. [18:52] Trying to stick as close as possible to any existing terminology used in previous translations (regardless of quality), but if it's straight up wrong or somehow problematic; I'll update it during this first pass. [18:56] If some games I really like have good tools for export/import of assets (o there is support language packs?), I might jump onto attempting to find time to do some titles too.
