[06:51] That's interesting... The GOG version of Maniac Mansion (v2) accepts any cpde for the security door, even if you turn on copy protection. Was that version ever sold back in the day, or are they unwittingly selling a cracked version? (I thought the official way budget re-releases handled that was to leave the security door open. That's what ScummVM does, anyway.) [06:52] I'm wondering because I seem to recall that there was a cracked version where this would cause problems with other keypads as well in the game. I'm not familiar with the game, but I guess I could dig out a walkthrough to see if I can test that... [06:56] it's likely. digital rereleases have to be cracked, and most publishers will just dig up the first cracked version they can dig up [07:20] The game's page (they sell original and enhanced versions in the same entry) states both DosBox and ScummVM used. Are you given the option (shotcut) to use either? I guess I could check, but I wonder if anyone knows the answer to this already. There's a review that implies that ScummVM is used by default https://www.gog.com/game/maniac_mansion [07:21] This GOG.com distribution includes both of two PC releases; the original version with 160x200 graphics and the enhanced version with 320x200 graphics. The original version has no problem --it is non-protection release. But the enhanced version is manual-protection release and the distribution does not include a document "Nuke'm Alarms Owner's Disarmament Quick Reference Guide" for solving the manual protection (security door at second [07:21] floor). By default, the distribution launches the game on SCUMMVM, that disables the manual protection; the security door has already opened. But it disables not only the security door but also any other passcode-based locks. I think GOG.com should add the Nuke'm Alarms Quick Reference Guide to the distribution and change and enable us changing launcher into DOSBOX. [07:26] antoniou79: They include ScummVM, though the enhanced version included an .EXE file as well. ScummVM leaves the security door open by default, but not if you enable copy protection. The problem is that I seem to recall that there have been bug reports in the past (e.g. https://bugs.scummvm.org/ticket/4205) where cracked versions of the game didn't just mean you could enter any code at the security door, but also in other puzzles. [07:27] So if GOG used that crack, the game may be a bit broken. [07:38] Yup. I found a safe above Nurse Edna's room, and I can use any combination to open that. Now let's hope I get the helpful support guy, and not the one who kept stalling and deflecting for ages when i reported that their version of Phantasmagoria 2 was broken. (I didn't get help with that until I filed a different bug report, asking how to contact the copyright holders, using that bug report as an example. At least, I *think* they've fixed it now.) [08:51] The changelog does not mention the fix, but the description of the setup file (Phantasmagoria 2) says "version: 1.0.06 sound fix" so this must be it. I got P2 from GOG (I previously had it on Steam), quite recently so I can't tell when this last version update was released. On their forums there are members that confirm that the missing sounds were fixed [08:51] https://www.gog.com/forum/phantasmagoria_series/phantasmagoria_2_problems_with_the_scummvm_version [09:00] grogbot: One of them is me. :-) [09:03] I submitted a report to Disney "Games and Apps Support" as well, since they actually acknowledge that Maniac Mansion is one of their products. I'm still curious if the NES and Amiga version are noticeably different. [22:55] I personally prefer the NES version because the rooms are shorter and the verbs are more compact [22:56] Although theres that Nintendo censorship [23:15] [scummvm] mduggan pushed 3 new commits to master: https://git.io/JciP0 [23:15] scummvm/master 58fece4 mduggan: ULTIMA8: Add custom deaths for No Regret weapons [23:15] scummvm/master 4544336 mduggan: ULTIMA8: Add another special No Regret death animation [23:15] scummvm/master 4a4fcbc mduggan: ULTIMA8: Fixes for No Regret menu buttons [23:30] I wonder if there are any fan-made ROM hacks to fix the NES version [23:30] Ah, yup, looks like there are some on romhacking dot net [23:30] Nifty [23:31] I never owned or played the NES version, but I've read reviews of it [23:31] I think the one thing that the C64 version has over other versions is that the opening music was compromised on almost every other platform. Other than that... I mean, almost any version is fine, really. [23:32] The c64 theme is pretty nice [23:42] Like, yeah, obviously the PC music isn't as good, the NES theme is an admirable translation (the NES APU is broadly comparable to the SID but substantially less flexible), but the Amiga version sounds bad, and... why? The Amiga was more than capable of doing a decent rendition of the music. ...Also music sounds worse in PAL. Not sure if the speed issue comes up cross-region otherwise. Especially the music. Because unless the timings were redone everything runs 16% too slow, which is extremely noticeable in music. [00:00] --- Tue Jul 6 2021
