[15:34] <grogbot> <rsn8887> what is xpra?
[15:34] <grogbot> <rsn8887> I love that interactive fiction is still so popular and going strong.
[15:36] <grogbot> <rsn8887> I once dabbled a bit with Inform, an IDE to write interactive fiction. It is so cool. I could write sentences like Chapter 1 Jim is a person in the hallway. The hallway is east of the lab. The lab contains a laser. A laser is an unmovable object. When staring into a laser, say "Are you sure you want to stare into the laser?" and they would become a game!!!
[15:38] <grogbot> <rsn8887> The output of Inform was a .z file that could run in Frotz etc.
[15:41] <grogbot> <rsn8887> Here is the webpage, a stellar piece of software: http://inform7.com

[15:46] --> Mia joined #scummvm.
[15:57] <grogbot> <rsn8887> It might become a bit unwieldy to write a large game with complex logic in it. The benefit: the source code reads like a book in itself.
[15:57] <grogbot> <rsn8887> I think they called it natural language programming or so.
[16:00] <grogbot> <madmoose> They said the same thing about COBOL.
[16:01] <grogbot> <SupSuper> yeah the sentences quickly become very unnatural as your game gets more complex, but it is neat
[16:08] <-- Shine_ left irc: Read error: Connection reset by peer
[16:11] <grogbot> <rsn8887> I think some award-winning games were actually written using Inform. But those games contain a lot of hard-to-read boilerplate sentences in the beginning, defining rules and grammar.
[16:11] <grogbot> <rsn8887> IF games are prone to subtle bugs.
[16:13] <grogbot> <rsn8887> For example, in the brilliant game 9:05 by Adam Cadre, you can "pick up car" instead of entering it, and it works. You just take the car and have it in your inventory. The authors have to think of everything weird the user might type.
[16:14] <grogbot> <rsn8887> Some IF games are quite free, almost like open world games.
[16:15] <grogbot> <rsn8887> I think early Lucasarts titles like Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken still had that mindset from IF games. They modeled a world. You could turn on/off every light switch, you could open/close every drawer and door. This is how it was in many IF games.
[16:16] <grogbot> <rsn8887> As games matured, the user was given less options to interact, everything became more streamlined IMO.
[16:16] <grogbot> <rsn8887> Authors focused on game experiences instead of playing around with the capabilities of the medium.
[16:20] <grogbot> <rsn8887> Nowadays, even in games that call themselves open world games, the interactions with the world are still more limited than in those old games. In most open world games, you can't even open or close doors, let alone turn light switches on or off. Your interactions are limited to shooting stuff mostly.
[16:21] <grogbot> <rsn8887> Shen Mue on Dreamcast was one of those games that continued this idea of interacting with everything. You could open all drawers etc. However, it becomes a bit tedious after a while, especially in 3D
