[12:52] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> Good morning!
[12:53] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> Well, so far so good with my Dockerfile. I've managed to build the image and compile the apk for a few configurations (pending compiling for all architectures will stable engines and all-engines)
[12:55] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> Is there a point in putting effort to cross-compiling pkg-config? It won't do that out of the box, and it does not seem that it's needed -- the scummvm's configure may pick the pkg-config from the native system if installed, and I am unsure if that's ok or not -- it does not seem to affect anything, but I could be wrong.
[12:55] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> Also, same for openssl. I think it will be hard to get it to compile with NDK r14b. I've made a few attempts and could not succeed at it
[12:56] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> as far as I can tell these are issues with our official buildbot config too
[12:57] <LePhilousophe> the only advantage I see at using a specific pkg-config is for default paths it uses to look at packages
[12:57] <LePhilousophe> I usually override these paths and use the native pkg-config and it works
[12:58] <LePhilousophe> for Android shouldn't we provide an alternative to curl using the native http client?
[12:58] <LePhilousophe> because using a cross compiled openssl will prevent using the android cert store
[13:05] --> brooksy joined #scummvm.
[13:08] <-- borosky left irc: Ping timeout: 268 seconds
[13:23] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> Freetype detection seems to depend on tge existence of pkg-config. I am using native, no overriding of folders, and that was enough to get it set
[13:26] <LePhilousophe> strange
[13:26] <LePhilousophe> or maybe android build system already defines the PKGCONFIG_ environment variables
[13:32] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> Ah maybe that is it. I actually run a script to set those and i probably included it and forgot

[20:16] <Grogbot> <astlouis44> hey ScummVM team! I have a question for you regarding some of the demos
[20:24] <Strangerke> astlouis44: Hi :) ... Just ask :)
[20:25] <Grogbot> <astlouis44> Hey just curious what the legality of the game demos are?
[20:25] <Grogbot> <astlouis44> Are they free to download, or even share?
[20:25] <Grogbot> <astlouis44> Was thinking that if they are shareware (which most of them are) then should be in the clear
[20:26] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> I am sure they are both free to download and share.
[20:26] <Strangerke> that's why we host them... they have always been distributes freely
[20:26] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> That's the idea of them being demos
[20:27] <Strangerke> *distributed
[20:27] <Grogbot> <astlouis44> OK, but say one of them was hosted on another website to be playable in browser... would that be legal also?
[20:28] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> probably. I they didn't charge for money
[20:28] <Grogbot> <astlouis44> OK great 🙂
[20:29] <Grogbot> <sluicebox> yes, it's the same game demo files in a zip, just being served up by someone else in a javascript emulator
[20:29] <Strangerke> which site do you have in mind?
[20:29] <Grogbot> <astlouis44> OK great

[20:29] <Grogbot> <astlouis44> Presenting.. monkey island in a browser!
[20:29] <Grogbot> <sluicebox> oh YOU are the one serving, haha!
[20:30] <Strangerke> nice :)
[20:30] <Grogbot> <sluicebox> i thought we were talking about archive.org/dosbox 😃
[20:30] <Grogbot> <SupSuper> if it's just demos it should be fine, archive.org does the same
[20:30] <Grogbot> <sluicebox> that's so cool
[20:30] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> archive goes beyond demos
[20:31] <Grogbot> <sluicebox> but they HAVE demos! 😃
[20:31] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> lol
[20:31] <Grogbot> <Henke37> the internet archive has an exemption in the law
[20:31] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> really?
[20:32] <Grogbot> <SupSuper> well that and they run on a "if they care, they'll take it down" policy 😛
[20:32] <Grogbot> <astlouis44> Yeah I can see some copyrights holders not liking it regardless
[20:32] <Grogbot> <SupSuper> they collect a lot of crap that they have to filter out later, but they'd rather collect it first just in case
[20:32] <Grogbot> <SupSuper> other sites probably can't afford that
[20:33] <Grogbot> <astlouis44> Disney owns the Monkey Island property now, and even though this could reach anybody through the simplicity of a URL, they'd kill it if possible
[20:35] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> archive is basically operating like an abandonware site as far as I can tell, with the additional option to play games on a browser.
[20:36] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> I am not complaining, it had been useful on occasion
[20:40] <Grogbot> <astlouis44> They are only MS-DOS games on internet archive though it seems
[20:43] <Grogbot> <Henke37> https://archive.org/details/apple_ii_library_4am?tab=collection
[20:50] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> like I said, there's lots more
[20:52] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> One interesting thing is that they have archives on Games magazines too, and sometimes of the CD's that came along with them
[20:52] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> There's probably lots of games' demos in there, if someone has the courage and time to waste
[20:52] <Grogbot> <SupSuper> i love digging through their old shareware CDs
[20:53] <Grogbot> <Henke37> i have my own collection of old shareware cds. technically from swedish magazines, but most stuff is in english anyway
[20:53] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> some of the old sneaky ones named "demos" even non-playable previews... is the one thing that bothers me
[20:54] <Grogbot> <Henke37> it's all ready to transfer if you know someone who wants it
[20:54] <Grogbot> <antoniou79> I've got my own pile too
[20:54] <Grogbot> <Henke37> heck, solve the postage and i will send you the magazines too.

[22:33] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> I mean the buildbot builds are the ones that were tested the most, so it makes sense to me to use that same toolchain to build release builds.'
[22:34] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> Otherwise what is the purpose of nightly builds, if release builds might be done with completely different compiler versions, libraries etc.
[22:34] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> So could exhibit all kinds of problems not apparent in the dailues
[22:36] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> I suppose there's a way to use the buildbot server for that purpose? Manually? Is it encouraged or discouraged?
[22:39] <Grogbot> <SupSuper> release builds would be too slow to build regularly. though they might also be closer to the final product for testing (optimizations etc.)
[22:39] <Grogbot> <SupSuper> can you download the buildbot toolchain and make your own builds?
[22:41] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> No.
[22:42] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> But I have a docker-based instance of the same toolchain here, for Vita.
[22:42] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> So that will work.
[22:42] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> For Switch, I can use the latest local toolchain, shouldn't be a problem
[22:43] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> For PSP, I actually used the buildbot server last time. But I think I can make a docker instance locally to use the exact same toolchain.

[22:46] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> Ah nevermind I forgot I updated the psp toolchain myself on the buildbot. So yes, I have the same version locally. So should all be good I guess.
[22:47] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> Still it seems an error prone thing, to build releases on different machines, different toolchais, than dailies.
[22:47] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> Especially since builds depend on ENV vars potentially.
[22:48] <Grogbot> <rsn8887> Which I hate in general btw. this dependence on external stuff. Meh.
