Apparently speedrunners found out years ago how the badly cracked version of Maniac Mansion that GOG (and Steam?) are selling allows you to bypass several puzzles. Well, good luck trying that with the current version of ScummVM. πŸ˜€ [05:57] just assume speedrunners find out every shortcut possible [05:57] I don't know what abandonware site Disney pirated it from, but a single byte has been changed in a data file of the enhanced version so that any keypad allows you to enter either the correct code or one where the last digit is wrong. [05:59] littlebobeep (~alMalsamo@gateway/tor-sasl/almalsamo) joined #scummvm. [05:59] Oh, I don't blame them for exploiting bugs. I blame Disney for selling pirated software. (Software they presumably own the rights to, but still...) [06:00] @sluicebox needs to investigate and blog about it [06:03] Maybe he'd do a better job of it than me. I was only able to trace the crack as far back as to a "PC Games Cheats & info List" (ver 2.1) dated 5 February 1996, where it was described simply as "Removing doc check". I assume it's a lot older than that, though. [06:05] I'm finally playing the game after all these years, though not unspoiled I'm afraid. I had already looked up the solution to what I consider to be the worst puzzle back when I was first investigating the crack and getting ScummVM to undo it. [06:06] I've played through the original version with no obvious problems, so feel free to add that to the 2.6.0 testing chart, if there is one. πŸ™‚ [06:06] I've only played to one of the endings of the enhanced version though. I'll have to do the other ones later. [06:06] ny00123 (~ny00123@2a0d:6fc2:6620:500:cdde:d016:baa1:a6ad) joined #scummvm. [07:42] I hope they go on sale for the summer sale [07:45] "I developed our second engine for Malathedra; mainly because it was vastly different from the Morning's Wrath engine; and the Morning's Wrath engine suffered from major design flaws and feature creep" [07:46] " A key element in our engine design change was to make the engine 100% data driven, using XML and Lua scripting" [07:47] "and now, three engines in," [07:48] looks like at least the first 3 games all have different engines [07:48] "2010 when we start licensing Selenite to the public. We already have some valuable folks set to be early adopters of Selenite, a notable celebrity would be Dave Gilbert and Wadjet Eye Games" [07:48] so it seems other games might use it. [07:51] I'm not certain if it is 3 different engines, or 3 iterations of the same engine, sounds like from the first game to the second game it was a complete re-write, then it is just upgrades to the same engine, although as you stated, it seems he may have moved to C# at some point. [16:36] DOS version same as C64 is maximum lazy direct port from AppleII with corners cut [16:37] Smedles (~quassel@2403:580d:1:0:aaa1:59ff:fe53:1a69) joined #scummvm. [16:37] Same was for MM2 and King's Bounty for PC and C64 sort of [16:37] On C64 verion, they even not changed stuff like "press esc button" even tho C64 has no esc button [16:38] Before 1991, NWC was primary an AppleII company, yea [16:39] For vanilla dos MM games there are this tool btw https://www.eskimo.com/~edv/lockscroll/WhereAreWe/ [16:39] I on PC first time played MM1-2 with those [16:40] Well, when I had a discussion with TICoKH, he said he'd been working on the GfxEngine version of M&M1, if I remember correctly. So if he finishes with that, there'd be potentially two versions of the game supported [16:41] Right, I was aware there were tools, but still more of a "cool" factor to have them part of the game itself πŸ™‚ [16:41] For GUI inspiration you may look at Mac version of MM1 btw [16:41] https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/581224061091446795/981960717022425088/unknown.png [16:41] Indeed, I just speak about functionality πŸ˜† [16:42] Tho original MM1 was meant to be played with hand drawn maps, there is a spell in the game, which tells you coordinate locations of your party [16:43] Wouldn't surprise me; even in Xeen with the maps it gives you an X/Y for the maps themselves (like D3) as well as a position within the map [16:43] I haven't actually looked at the spells yet, BTW, so interesting to know it was there way back in the first game [16:44] You can also look at MM2 implementation which is has almost identical GUI to MM1, but when you cast spell of Wizard's Eye it change GUI to image two [16:44] https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/581224061091446795/981961445090685018/unknown.png [16:44] https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/581224061091446795/981961445388484618/unknown.png [16:45] And MM2 for Macintosh for compressing. [16:45] https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/581224061091446795/981961711613534208/unknown.png [16:45] Cool. I may have to take inspiration from that when implementing the minimap display. M&M4 was actually the first game of the series I played, so I'm actually unfamiliar with the first trilogy [16:47] Oh, really, they are awesome. Tho MM1-2 a bit different from 3-5 because of the combat and some other things [16:47] Sorry I annoy you, but if you have any MM-related questions, ping me freely (: [16:48] Sure, I'll keep that in mind, thanks πŸ‘ [16:50] littlebobeep (~alMalsamo@gateway/tor-sasl/almalsamo) left irc: Ping timeout: 240 seconds [16:56] littlebobeep (~alMalsamo@gateway/tor-sasl/almalsamo) joined #scummvm. I believe I filed it under MacOS specifically before I knew. [17:25] @Coz what is the ID? [17:26] 13531... sorry to post here also. [19:01] Yes the M&M1 and M&M2 is same engine, but in book 2 got massive updates based to 1. The only unfortunate thing of PCEngine version is have major changes in text and quest system compared to others. Have big updates on gfx and sound side but with fixed party to much is lost from original plot. But the DOS version is not a big step back against of original Apple II using 6 color max with lower resolution and NTSC color burst effect what is always looks wierd to me. Once I remembered them - spell codes and basic things it was the main option to go for me. [19:39] littlebobeep (~alMalsamo@gateway/tor-sasl/almalsamo) joined #scummvm. [19:45] I hate the spells is only numbers in M&M1, the one of good thing in PCengine spells works nice with 4 way+2button console like controll. Is same the spells is almost same in Mac version, but in MacUI is would nothing to add some extra text to buttons. The spell names is loaded into memory, I think this was short of some kind copy protection. [19:49] Well, on original AppleII versions they were limited by the amount of available space, I guess. Also I fine with numbers cuz they have this "circles" system so this makes sense In Genesis and SNES versions of MM2 (which I hope will be in ScummVM one day too) they have names for spells (but they cut "who is in the melee combat" system in this versions, shame!)
