[13:57] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> Hello all, would this be the right channel to ask in for what *I think* is a ScummVM issue (but might be user error as well)?
[14:05] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> I'll go ahead & post here for now, if I should move some where else, please let me know
[14:05] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> I'm playing the GOG version of The Curse of Monkey Island on Linux (downloaded using Heroic). Heroic has a feature to run games that come with the Windows version of ScummVM with the Linux-native version instead (although I can confirm that the same issue also happens when running ScummVM manually).
[14:05] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> Launching the game, Heroic will run `flatpak run org.scummvm.ScummVM -c ../monkey3.ini monkey3` inside `<game dir>/scummvm`. This results in the following output:
[14:05] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> ```
[14:05] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> Using configuration file: ../monkey3.ini

[14:05] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> And an error message (screenshot attached)
[14:05] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> However, if I launch ScummVM without arguments, and add the game by selecting the directory, it launches fine. I would like to be able to start the game from Heroic directly though.
[14:05] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> Let me know if you need any more details

[14:08] <grogbot> [discord] <gu3> is it the only game that fails?
[14:09] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> I have not tried to run other games, will have to check if I have any in my GOG account. Given the game works when added manually, I would not suspect this to be a setup issue though
[14:12] <grogbot> [discord] <gu3> This one is free, and it seems to use ScummVM: https://www.gog.com/en/game/flight_of_the_amazon_queen

[14:29] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> ScummVM shipped with the games is version 2.0.0. Build date seems to be Dec 9 2017
[14:29] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> dunno. although i don't think you need the gog inis, you can just pass the game path to scummvm directly
[14:33] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> Will look into that. Would look something like `flatpak run org.scummvm.ScummVM --path=.. --auto-detect` then, I assume?
[14:39] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> yeah
[14:42] <-- ced117 left irc: Ping timeout: 244 seconds
[14:42] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> you can also pass the path and the config if you wanna keep their launch options
[14:44] --> ced117 joined #scummvm.
[14:49] <-- ced117 left irc: Ping timeout: 245 seconds
[14:50] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> Am I not passing the path there?
[14:51] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> yea i mean this command isn't, thus the scummvm error: `flatpak run org.scummvm.ScummVM -c ../monkey3.ini monkey3`
[14:51] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> i had a deeper look and i think heroic is just parsing the gog launch arguments, but my gog inis have the game path, so i'm not sure why yours don't
[14:52] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> so to summarize, the heroic error is because the game path doesn't exist, it needs to be either in the ini or the command line
[14:52] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> You can see the launch command in the `goggame-....info` file. Mine says `"arguments": "-c \"..\\queen.ini\" queen",`
[14:53] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> yea, here's one of my inis and you can see the game path there
[14:53] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/581224061091446795/1517180389700014100/loom.ini?ex=6a3557d8&is=6a340658&hm=651b9cc741e0a4a848ce22dd81e726abca7574c4606ce4a2a0914f7738aeff99&
[14:54] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> Ah, it's in the .ini
[14:54] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> That file is generated by GOG's scriptinterpreter as far as I know, so we don't have much control there

[15:00] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> i guess you can't have both, if you pass an .ini it expects the path to be in there
[15:00] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> so heroic would need to either ignore the ini or make sure the path is written in there like gog does
[15:11] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> Gotcha, will look into what we're doing wrong for the path to go missing in the file
[15:11] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> If it's not too much trouble, could you check whether your ini files for the specific games I've tried also have the path option? I'd hate to go searching for an issue in our tooling that ends up being a per-game thing
[15:13] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> Actually, scratch that, I'll just test Loom on my end
[15:15] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> when i install them via gog galaxy the path is there, haven't tried standalone
[15:15] <grogbot> [discord] <criezy> Maybe the path is not present in the ini file that comes with the game but is added by the gog installer (since you can install in custom locations)?
[15:16] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> Yes, it is added by ScriptInterpreter
[15:16] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> That's all I wanted to know, thanks!
[15:18] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> To be specific, the whole file is generated by it, it is not in the game files at all
[15:29] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> Alrighty, update: The problem here is... architectural? ScriptInterpreter is a Windows application, so we deliberately don't pass it the game path if the game depends on ScummVM, since it's gonna put Windows paths into the file (which won't work for the Linux version of ScummVM)
[15:29] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> The easiest way to resolve this would sadly be to have ScummVM accept `--path` from the commandline if it's not in the config. Would you accept such a change?

[21:06] <grogbot> [discord] <commandmc> My assumption there was that if there are any special options in the config file for some games, GOG surely must've had a reason to add those into there at some point (and thus skipping it may cause compatibility issues). That's coming from an outside perspective of ScummVM though; if you think that running without the config & `--auto-detect` is the better approach, we can totally do that
