[06:02] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Hey all... I have a bizarre problem with scummvm on Windows 11. For some bizzaro reason, it refuses to output any sound. I've searched everywhere for a potential solution to this problem and (somewhat unshockingly) this doesn't seem to be a thing for anyone else. I've tried both an AGI game as well as a scumm game. Both with the same result.
[06:03] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> And before anyone asks, yes my sound devices are working lol. I got plenty of games outside of scummvm that sound just fine.
[07:06] <grogbot> [discord] <antoniou79> We'd need more info beforefiguring
[07:06] <grogbot> [discord] <antoniou79> We'd need more info before figuring out the potential cause (edited)
[07:08] <grogbot> [discord] <antoniou79> - What's your ScummVM version?
[07:08] <grogbot> [discord] <antoniou79> - have you tested with a clean installation (with a clean scummvm.ini configuration file)?
[07:08] <grogbot> [discord] <antoniou79> - Which games specifically have you tested with? (some games may have no sound to play at all)
[07:09] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> It's the latest version. But I haven't tested it with a clean installation. I thought uninstalling it and resinstalling it would work. But yeah it seems the ini file stayed intact lol. I can delete that (I assume a new one will be generated when I run the exe again)
[07:09] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> * anything in the scummvm logs?
[07:09] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> * have you tried setting different sound devices as the default?
[07:09] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> It was The Dig.
[07:09] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Yeah I tried a bunch.
[07:10] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> also is it all audio or just music/sound/etc
[07:10] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Space Quest III was the other one. (I think that's technically a SCI game but for some reason it reads as AGI)
[07:10] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> All audio.
[07:11] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> I'm thinking this is game specific. midi stuff seems to work. I just got sound on space quest 5.
[07:12] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Yeah it's game specific. I just happened to try two games that had problems.
[07:13] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> that is strange. can you post your scummvm log?
[07:13] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Sure one sec.
[07:15] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Okay I'm a dummy. I'm in the scummvm directory but see no log.
[07:15] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> there's a link to it in Options > Paths
[07:16] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> gotcha
[07:17] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Okay that's freaking weird. It's now working
[07:17] --> DominusExult joined #scummvm.
[07:17] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Wow. I'm uh, I don't know what to say.
[07:17] <grogbot> [discord] <antoniou79> Some additional questions
[07:17] <grogbot> [discord] <antoniou79> - Had you tried these specific games (in their current folders) with a previous ScummVM version and they used to work?
[07:17] <grogbot> [discord] <antoniou79> - Are the data folders for these games tampered with (like moving data files around or editing a file or such) or are they as they were on their original form?
[07:17] <grogbot> [discord] <supsuper> maybe the games had some weird settings?
[07:18] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Yeah! I wonder if I have two versions of scummvm installed and whatever's coming up in Start is an older version.

[07:18] Nick change: DominusExult -> Dominus
[07:19] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> I've run the exe directly from where it's located (in Program Files\ScummVM)
[07:19] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Lemme test that theory out. If that doesn't work, then... Yeah I dunno what to say hahaha.
[07:20] <grogbot> [discord] <antoniou79> Well, at least you know it can work 😄
[07:20] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Okay yeah that theory is bunk. The shortcut points to the same directory and exe hahahaa
[07:20] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Yeah I'm happy lol
[07:21] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> This is like calling over a plumber for a broken sink only for it to start working when they get here lol
[07:22] <grogbot> [discord] <antoniou79> This is unrelated, but had happened to me and have seen it reported on a forum too (I think it was on Steam forums?); while playing Blade Runner with ScummVM I was getting no sound at all. Then while raising the volume I got some whispering sound only.
[07:23] <grogbot> [discord] <antoniou79> Turns out, I had connected the earphones on the thing, but I was not wearing them
[07:23] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Ahhhh. Yeah I did something equally stupid earlier today. I thought something was wrong with my headset during a video call, only to realize I somehow managed to push the mute button on them 😄
[07:24] <grogbot> [discord] <hokyman> Alrighty. Apologies for wasting folks' time here. But really appreciate the help!
[07:25] <grogbot> [discord] <antoniou79> it's no problem. glad you got it working

[08:41] <grib> @sev____ Your latest Screenshot Friday screenshot looks like it's using ScummVM's fallback font rather than the custom app-provided font, and maybe at the wrong size. There's definitely at least one encoding issue as well. I wrote some notes that might help solve some of the text problems: https://gribbet.neocities.org/scummvm/scummvm-trektech-text-considerations.txt

[12:18] <grogbot> [discord] <sev____> @grib regarding the formatting. I reverted that commit awhile ago: dc52513ed3141480931c89cee4d3386dd50f62ae

[12:48] <grogbot> [discord] <sev____> so, I am not sure what is breaking the formatting at the moment
[12:49] <grib> @sev____ Ah, well, I guess there's another reason for falling back to the default font. Perhaps size mismatch... maybe through font mapping.
[13:02] <grib> The default font map in Director 4.0 maps size 14 Times (Mac) to size 12 Times New Roman (Windows), because they are (approximately) the same number of pixels. I didn't get around to checking the font map for trektech, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a similar mapping for the custom font. (Maybe with "Map None" as well, to inhibit transcoding codepoints).
[14:03] <grib> I checked and trektech does have a font mapping for the custom font but it's not very interesting. I don't think the answer is here. The only mention of size is in the font name. Mac:"Univers-Condensed STTM" => Win:"TREKCON 9"

[23:50] <grib> @idaho_doesnt_try If ScummVM can play the Windows version of a game, usually it will work anywhere ScummVM works. So the Mac part only matters for getting the files off the original disk. Is that the part that you're stuck on?
