The `.bmp` parser in scummfont is very crude, and if your image editor changes some settings in the BMP files, scummfont gets very confused (the original 2003 exe would silently insert bogus data in the `CHAR` resources in that case; the newer releases do some safety checks).

[21:02] <grogbot> [discord] <dwa> * neither using `-c` nor `-r`: your translation file will be pure ASCII, and any non-ASCII character will be displayed through an escape sequence, such as `\123` (which is the number of the character in your font file)

If you type a real '&' or non-breaking space character, iconv/scummtr won't know what to do with it, because the old DOS code pages often didn't have any support for it (unless you "steal" a character for it in your font tables& LucasArts already did that for some characters anyway, see `^` use
