[02:18] <grogbot> [discord] <mduggan> Heart of China intro movie now works properly - instead of using the TTM script engine, the original had some native code to do the scrolling (probably because it uses 3 overlapping layers) with a bunch of hard-coded offsets. It didn't take all that long to reproduce but was just something I'd been putting off

[16:02] <Bestest> long shot; by any chance, does anyone here own any german-developed games with ring protection (besides tivola)? Mainly asking about Terzio (https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?title=Terzio), but interested in any others people might know
[16:02] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> All ringed games I have are from Tivola :/
[16:03] <Bestest> yeah, fair enough, haha
[16:04] <Bestest> I'm trying to research copy-X (specific ring protection) but it's annoying because it doesn't usually clearly identify itself as such, so most people online never referred to anything that way
[16:05] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> Ah, that's interesting, I just recently learned on the other Discord that that's what Tivola uses
[16:05] <Bestest> plus ProtectionID conflates copy-X and Ring Protech for some reason, despite them being (as far as I'm aware) unrelated, so people tend to mix that a lot too
[16:05] <Bestest> the other discord?
[16:06] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> VCPG
[16:06] <Bestest> oh, right
[16:06] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> VGPC (edited)
[16:06] <Bestest> yeah, that's probably from me haha
[16:06] <Bestest> I'd join the scummvm discord but i already used my phone number on another discord account
[16:06] <Bestest> was just asking here since the main customers i've seen so far are Tivola, Sixteen Tons Entertainment, Magix, and Terzio
[16:07] <Bestest> and Terzio has a lot of games in scummvm, so i was hoping someone here might know
[16:07] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> The Terzio games we have in the detection tables right now are a bit too "new" right now, they mostly rely on newer versions of Macromedia Director which are not supported yet
[16:08] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> And for some games I only have the re-releases that don't have a copy protection anymore
[16:08] <Bestest> ah gotcha
[16:08] <Bestest> terzio is especially annoying for this because it seems like they rereleased a bunch of games in 2008, and a lot of those have protectdisc
[16:08] <Bestest> but also some of those have copy-X?
[16:09] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> I don't know how to properly identify it though
[16:09] <Bestest> Yeah, that's how i first started looking into terzio
[16:09] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> e.g. for the Tivola games you have a folder with "ZDATA" or something like that on the disc
[16:09] <Bestest> I dunno what range of games has it
[16:09] <Bestest> (those are the only ones i've tested)
[16:09] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> but I also have a tivola disc where the hidden folder is named differently
[16:09] <Bestest> yeahh it's inconsistent
[16:10] <Bestest> what's it called on that one?
[16:10] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> let me check
[16:11] <Bestest> oh wait a second, those are hidden folders?
[16:11] <Bestest> I'm on linux, so I didn't know that
[16:11] <Bestest> that's actually really useful information, haha
[16:11] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> For the discs with "ZDATA", they are hidden on _most_ discs, but not on all
[16:11] <Bestest> ah gotcha
[16:11] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> and to make things even more fun, I have a rerelease that has the folder containing the "garbled" files, but no ring, so the files read properly...
[16:12] <Bestest> oh oooo, which one is that?
[16:12] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> It is one of the releases of "Masters of the Elements", I have like 4 copies of it and only one has the ring
[16:12] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> ironically, I got the version with the ring just a couple of weeks ago, so I didn't process it yet
[16:13] <Bestest> I haven't found any samples like that yet, the only game i have with remnants is the russian version of Emergency 2, which has remnants in a different way
[16:13] <Bestest> in terms of identification via files; if a disc has "optgraph.dll" on it, it's copy-X
[16:13] <Bestest> but unfortunately that's only one of two variants of copy-X
[16:13] <Bestest> the other variant, which is more common on tivola discs, doesn't have any actual software-based protection and just has the dummy folder
[16:13] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> I was wrong, the disc where I was thinking that the folder is named differently is also called "ZDAT"
[16:13] <Bestest> ah ok
[16:14] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> I have never seen optgraph.dll though
[16:14] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> none of my tivola discs has it
[16:14] <Bestest> yeah fair
[16:14] <Bestest> some tivola discs do have it
[16:14] <Bestest> but they don't seem to have used it as much
[16:14] <Bestest> the nice thing for identification is that thus far (and lining up with a statement from optimal media, the company who did copy-x), copy-X protected discs only seem to have mastering SID IFPI L571
[16:15] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> Affirmative, that applies to the discs I have
[16:15] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> They all have L571 or L573
[16:15] <Bestest> wait, some of the ringed ones have L573?
[16:17] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> ah, no L571 only... the 573 one doesn't have a ring
[16:17] <Bestest> ah gotcha
[16:17] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> so actually this information is very helpful
[16:17] <Bestest> anyhow, do you mind if I just talk to you in VGPC haha
[16:17] <grogbot> [discord] <rootfather> haha, no, go ahead 😄

[22:57] <logix> in case somebody wants to snag it, "Return of the Phantom" (microprose, MADS engine, but I don't think supported yet) is free right now at gog.com
[23:03] <grogbot> [discord] <strangerke> Indeed, phantom isn't supported yet. When we stopped, the hardcoded logic was there iirc, but we had issues with the dialogs and we somehow switched to someting else

[23:03] <grogbot> [discord] <strangerke> It's been a while
[23:18] <grogbot> [discord] <dreammaster> I do want to return to it one of these days, but there's just always been other priorities. Plus MADS was a particularly difficult engine to work on. Maybe after I finally implement some of the Legend games, which has been on my long-term wish list for years.. particularly the Gateway games, and Companions of Xanth
[23:19] <-- ny00123 left irc: Remote host closed the connection
[23:23] <logix> for the most part I just wanted to point out that it's free right now (for the next ~14 hours), but also that while it "somewhere on the horizon" for scummvm, people grabbing it shouldn't expect it to work now (or any time soon) :) but thanks, I appreciate you guys working on it (even if it's on hiatus right now)
[23:24] <grogbot> [discord] <dreammaster> I mentioned elsewhere, but ironically the other MADS game Dragonsphere was actually free on GOG for years. But then it went back to being paid again a while back.
[23:25] <grogbot> [discord] <dreammaster> At worst, they've both been only a few dollars each, so when they're finally supported, it'll at least be easy for people to get a hold of them
