[00:17] <yury_> Hi! I am interested in getting involved in scummvm with google summer of code. I was wondering if anyone could give me some more information about the projects that are available
[00:18] <criezy> Hi yury_.

[00:19] <criezy> I assume you already looked at the ideas page on the wiki?
[00:19] <yury_> yeah i looked through those
[00:19] <criezy> Is there anything in particular you are interested in.
[00:19] <yury_> I guess I would be interested in learning about some of the details
[00:20] <yury_> like what kinds of things would need to be done to improve the gui?
[00:21] <criezy> For each task you have a technical contact that can give you more details. In the case of GUI this is _sev, but he might be sleeping already.
[00:21] <criezy> It is quite late in Europe where most of us are.
[00:22] <yury_> ah okay that makes sense. Sorry I am in America so I didn't know it was so late
[00:22] <yury_> When would be a good time that isn't so late?
[00:23] <criezy> You have better chances to catch us 2 or 3 hours before now.
[00:25] <yury_> Got it. I will try and come back tomorrow a little earlier. Thank you for the information

[17:40] <rsn8887> I made a change to configure I should have made a PR for discussion. I added two options:
[17:40] <rsn8887> --enable-all-unstable-engines and --disable-all-unstable-engines
[17:40] <rsn8887> I felt that this completes the amount of control the user has when running configure to select engines.
[17:41] <rsn8887> Before the user could not say anything to get only stable engines, or use --enable-all-engines to get all stable and unstable, or give a list of single engines to include/exclude
[17:42] <rsn8887> So this was a bit asymmetric. With these new options, combined with the original ones, all combinations of stable/unstable can be selected easily, without having to resort to long lists of engine names.
[17:43] <rsn8887> In addition, this allowed me to elegantly "--disable-all-unstable-engines" in the Vita Buildbot, because the sheer number of unstable engines causes the Vita executable to hit some memory (stack?) or size limit and crashes on startup.
[17:44] <rsn8887> I did some extensive testing yesterday and it is definitely the size of the executable (memory footprint of all engines) that causes the crash, it is irrelevant WHICH engines are added exactly.
[17:45] <rsn8887> The quickest workaround would be to distribute two executables for Vita: One with only stable engines, and one with only unstable engines compiled in
[17:48] <logix> I'll leave somebody else to judge whether the options to configure are good or not - but I agree something like this is the easiest workaround for the original problem
[17:59] <joostp> ... until more of the unstable engines become stable ;)
[18:00] <logix> or vice versa :P

[20:15] <_sev> and where is the content?
[20:15] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> i've made this in photoshop to get it done fast, but if i was to make it in HTML, i could make it responsive

[20:16] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> my point was to clear up a lot of the page so it looks cleaner, i'll rearrange the rest of the content under other menu options. All of what was on the right side of the menu (the vertical menu) would be re-arranged into the horizontal menu
[20:17] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> I could make a more detailed mock-up with more time, maybe in HTML. What content would you like to put in focus?
[20:17] <_sev> what is currently on www.scummvm.org?

[20:23] <_sev> FleetAdmiral[m]1: We never had a landing page
[20:24] <criezy> On principle I agree that we would benefit from a decluttered home page where the download would be more prominent.
[20:24] <snover> i think that increasing the prominence of the download on the home page, and simplifying the introduction text, are both steps in the right direction.
[20:25] <snover> the news is still important, and i think should be represented on the page
[20:25] <-- ashutosh97 left irc: Read error: Connection reset by peer
[20:25] <m_kiewitz> wjp: have you read about github's ToS changes?
[20:25] <m_kiewitz> for example here http://joeyh.name/blog/entry/removing_everything_from_github/
[20:25] <m_kiewitz> i have no idea if that's actually correct or not
[20:26] <snover> i dont like that there is no link to documentation
[20:26] <criezy> The absence of the news is the main issue I have with the mockup. I am not sure that moving the news away from it is a good idea.
[20:27] <m_kiewitz> wjp: there's also this https://www.mirbsd.org/permalinks/wlog-10_e20170301-tg.htm
[20:27] <criezy> As for the documentation FleetAdmiral[m]1 did mention that the side menu will be moved to the top. I just assume that it is incomplete in the mockup for now but will be there.
[20:27] <snover> i personally might prefer a little more cue from the above-the-fold design of videolan.org
[20:29] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> Yes, the mockup is incomplete and simply to show the barebone structure of how it's aimed to be built around. Since everyone's being mentioning news and documentation, i guess i could add those as main headers (or prominent sub-menu options). _sev: Is it alright if i call the home page of my mockup a landing page, because that's what it looks like to me. Good to hear the de-cluttering is looking good - that was my
[20:29] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> main aim for this mockup :)
[20:30] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> Any other suggestions? Should i make another mockup with the suggested changes to show how the final design would look like imo, or get onto working on something (possibly a bug), and mention this in my proposal?
[20:31] <wjp> m_kiewitz: I don't follow their reasoning at all.
[20:32] <_sev> FleetAdmiral[m]1: so far your mockup is missing the primary purpose of our site
[20:33] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> snover: I like the clean design videolan.org but am personally against their inclusion of the news and development sections, if i was to go to their website with the sole purpose of downloading a product, all that doesn't matter to me
[20:33] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> _sev: could you please elaborate on that? I'll focus on improving it as per your inputs
[20:33] <_sev> and why your primary target is mobile version of the site is out of my comprehension
[20:34] <-- ajax16384 left irc: Read error: Connection reset by peer
[20:34] <wjp> Hrm, I think videolan.org is rather horrible. No structure or alignment to guide you through the page
[20:34] <_sev> yes, that site is a mess
[20:35] <criezy> I don't like videolan.org either. On a first look I am completly lost as I don't see any organisation or logic on how the content is layed out on the page.
[20:35] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> _sev: my primary target is not mobile version of the site at all? What made it seem like that? If its the dimensions, that's because i made it in photoshop, my aim was to just show the design and de-cluttering, when coding, it'd be responsive
[20:35] <_sev> FleetAdmiral[m]1: if our sole purpose would be to let users download ScummVM, the we would go with an FTP server
[20:36] <_sev> FleetAdmiral[m]1: because of the layout? How can you imagine those 3 paragraphs of text on a 22" monitor?
[20:36] <wjp> m_kiewitz: my preliminary conclusion is that those posts about the github ToS are incorrect. They seem to interpret granting rights as taking away other rights granted in other ways
[20:37] <snover> re videolan, i was referring primarily to the main header treatment, with the screenshot on the left, the description and clear call to action for downloads on the right
[20:37] <_sev> snover: those are good points. The main part is a mess, though
[20:37] <snover> yeah& i would not want to copy the things further down :)
[20:37] <snover> sorry if that was unclear
[20:38] <m_kiewitz> wjp: well the ToS says that you grant the right for every other user on github to basically do anything to the code, no strings attached
[20:38] <wjp> m_kiewitz: no, you grant them rights to use the github interface
[20:38] <m_kiewitz> it's weird that they didn't write "which may be limited by the license of the corresponding project like GPL"
[20:38] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> _sev: Alright, if you could mention what you'd like to be in focus, i'll incoporate that. like i said, i did what i felt was right by my personal opinion. I'll keep screens ize in mind in my next mockup
[20:38] <_sev> FleetAdmiral[m]1: THE content
[20:39] <logix> FleetAdmiral[m]1: hm, if I go to a website, want to download the product and don't see a download link, I usually start with "ctrl-f download" (or cmd-f, ..., depending on what OS I'm on), that also works on scummvm.org
[20:39] <logix> FleetAdmiral[m]1: I'm just saying *I* don't find the download links very hard to find, but "the average user" might have more problems
[20:40] <logix> FleetAdmiral[m]1: but the download link on scummvm.org really isn't immediately visible, I can agree to that
[20:40] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> ^that was my point, i had to look all around to find the download link when it should have been right in front of me
[20:40] <m_kiewitz> wjp: the ToS say: "If you set your pages and repositories to be viewed publicly, you grant each User of GitHub a nonexclusive, worldwide license to access your Content through the GitHub Service, and to use, display and perform your Content, and to reproduce your Content solely on GitHub as permitted through GitHub's functionality."
[20:41] <m_kiewitz> "...and to use, display and perform your content and to reproduce your content solely on github as permitted by github functionality"
[20:41] <snover> m_kiewitz: what did it say before?
[20:41] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> alright, i'll keep the content in mind, so the different subsections could have small desciptions, with links of - Downlaod, Documentation, Developments, Contribution
[20:41] <wjp> m_kiewitz: you're going to have to spell out how that is problematic
[20:42] <FleetAdmiral[m]1> ^would that be right? I'm sorry if i'm being difficult. I'm jsut trying to find everything i need to keep in mind for the next time i'm working on the mockup
[20:42] <m_kiewitz> wjp: someone could fork it but it inside a non-public repo on github and then it's ToS vs GPL, I guess?
[20:42] <wjp> that's not against the GPL, is it?
[20:43] <m_kiewitz> well, when the software got modified, the changes should go public, right? (in case we asked for them) or not?
[20:43] <wjp> no
[20:43] <wjp> why?
[20:43] <logix> no, only if you make the corresponding binaries public
[20:44] <m_kiewitz> yes, that's what i meant of course
[20:44] <snover> from what m_kiewitz pasted, there would seem to arise a potential conflict if a GitHub user has had their right to access code revoked due to a licensing violation, as the terms of service says that any user of GitHub has the right to access the content
[20:46] <wjp> s/access/distribute/
[20:46] <wjp> that is a fair point
[20:52] <peterkohaut> i see problem with the term "use content", does it mean, the licensee can do anything with the code?
[20:53] <wjp> I wonder how "your Content" would be interpreted exactly
[20:54] <peterkohaut> there is a definition of content
[20:54] <peterkohaut> Content refers to content featured or displayed through the Website, including without limitation text, d
[20:54] <peterkohaut> ...
[20:54] <peterkohaut> https://help.github.com/articles/github-terms-of-service/#a-definitions
[20:54] <wjp> that's not the word of those two I was uncertain about
[20:55] <wjp> please do assume I can read :-)
[20:55] <m_kiewitz> shouldn't they have written something about content licenses as well or is that automatically implied?
[20:56] <snover> reading from the terms themselves, the spirit of the agreement seems to be to allow github to do the things github does
[20:56] <m_kiewitz> i mean they mention licenses as well, but under "you may grant further rights".
[20:56] <peterkohaut> sorry wjp:)
[20:57] <snover> so i dont really think there is any issue here
[20:57] <m_kiewitz> instead of "you grant all users of github this and that, but those users have to also follow the license of the project"
[21:01] <wjp> snover: that's how I read it too, yes
[21:03] <snover> it would be nice if they clarified the process by which these rights may be revoked. the good news is the word irrevocable isnt anywhere in this.
[21:03] <peterkohaut> i have really bad experience with things as spirit and good intention when it comes to law:)

[22:13] <Joefish> and I don't know what to do about it. It was my first PR so I'm kinda new to that :)
[22:13] <Joefish> ah cool
[22:14] <criezy> Yes, you can ignore the check fail. It is due to an unrelated commit on the titanic engine.
[22:15] <t0by> Hi Joefish
[22:16] <-- ashutosh97 left irc: Ping timeout: 264 seconds
[22:17] <Joefish> I changed as little as possible to fix the bug so the commits are easier to read. But currently I do some refactoring of the code so it doesn't trigger potentially 4-5 redraws and removal of ifdefs. Unfortuntely I introduced some small bugs so I'll make a PR when they're ironed out
[22:20] <Joefish> btw I guess once the PR is closed I can remove the commits in my fork, can't I? Yesterday I removed them thinking that they're buffered in the PR but instead to my surprise the PR was closed :/
[22:22] <wjp> once it's merged you can remove them, yes
[22:22] <wjp> but it's better to create a PR from a branch in your fork rather than from master

[22:24] <Joefish> yea that was my regret once I realized it :)
[22:25] <t0by> well, once the PR is merged it does not make much sense to remove them after all - they *will be* in upstream master as well :)

This also makes loadNewTheme() return true although the GUI was not loaded correctly. With the font loading fix I can
