[15:50] <criezy> Do you mean allowing direct editing of the path in the dialog to select a game path after clicking on Add Game?
[15:51] <criezy> I am not too familiar with that one as on macOS we use the native file selector instead, but I think I remember others complaining about this path selection being frustrating.

[17:20] <mataniko> i think on windows it probably makes sense to use the native file selector too
[17:20] <mataniko> but on other platforms, writing the path is not ideal
[17:20] <mataniko> and potentially dangerous
[17:29] <Sedictious_> I mainly had Windows in mind but you are probably right.
[17:30] <-- ignalina left irc: Quit: ignalina
[17:41] <mataniko> It's probably better to go back and see if there's a reason why the native file dialog isn't used in Windows
[17:49] --> ignalina joined #scummvm.
[18:02] <SupSuper> the windows folder picker sucks. you could use the windows file picker but it's kinda hacky to apply it to folders
[18:14] <mataniko> yeah the folder picker also doesn't let you type in a path
[18:15] <dreammaster> Well, some Windows apps, like Handbrake, use a 'select folder' variant of the dialog. And I'm inclined to think that it's not custom for Handbrake, but provided by Windows
[18:16] <mataniko> I don't think the file picker needs a hacky solution, it should be a matter of setting acceptFiles to flase
[18:16] <dreammaster> Though saying that, I don't havce any real problems with the current built-in dialog ScummVM has
[18:16] <mataniko> or ValidateNames
[18:19] <mataniko> hmm looking further it does seem a little hacky to do folder only selection in the FileDialog
[18:19] <mataniko> can always just improve the existing dialog to have an editable path
[18:21] <SupSuper> well IFileDialog is a vista+ only thing, before that you would have to mess around with the controls
[18:21] <SupSuper> but yes everyone just uses a customized file picker because the folder picker sucks :p dunno how "standard" it is
[18:22] <SupSuper> you could reverse one of these back into its win32 calls: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/31059/how-do-you-configure-an-openfiledialog-to-select-folders

[22:15] <SupSuper> the more you know
[22:20] <-- ny00123 left irc: Quit: Leaving
[22:20] <dreammaster> Thanks; good to have it confirmed
[22:23] <SupSuper> i don't know what scummvm win32 support is like, but i'm all for more native pickers. the default one is workable, but anyone that accumulates old games tends to develop a hierarchy that's easier to type out than browse through ;)
[22:30] <Sedictious_> I already started digging in the source and probably start working on it soon. Would a native picker be preferable to simply offering the option to type in the path?
[22:30] <-- K4T left irc: Ping timeout: 264 seconds
[22:33] <dreammaster> Good question. I'm actually on the fence, in that I like the current folder dialog. If you're the one going to be doing the development, it really comes down to which you prefer to implement.
[22:34] <dreammaster> Though keeping in mind that if you add the native dialog, unless theres's consensus to switch over it, it might end up as a compilation option disabled by default. Having a typeahead in the existing dialog would be useful for all systems, so it's probably got more value
[22:34] <Deledrius> My main problem with the current non-native picker on Windows is that I can't access network shares unless I have them assigned to a drive letter.
[22:35] <dreammaster> Hmmm.. that's true. I don't have a local network at home, so I haven't had that problem
[22:35] <Deledrius> This is not a problem in OSX, since the native picker navigates that fine. On Windows, there's no way to get to the network shares without manually editing the scummvm.ini to a UNC path (which works fine as long as it's on it and you don't navigate back to a local drive)
[22:36] <Deledrius> And all my game data is on a network computer, so this has been a long-standing minor annoyance (but I've just worked around it)
[22:36] <SupSuper> a new textfield is probably simpler than obtaining consensus on the windows situation, although resolving paths might be harder than a picker
[22:36] <Deledrius> Just the ability to manually enter a path would mitigate it.
[22:37] <Deledrius> And probably easier than trying to support the changing Win API across the different versions that ScummVM supports.
[22:37] <SupSuper> Deledrius: that reminds me, is there a gui option to edit the default game path without digging into the ini? that would also mitigate it somewhat
[22:38] <Deledrius> Not that I know of.
[22:39] <Deledrius> The last path is only in the ini, I think? At least I don't see it.
[22:39] <Deledrius> And all the places that set paths use the internal-picker on Windows anyway, so they don't help.
[22:39] <SupSuper> true. i might mess around with the picker idea myself anyways, just to have a working comparison. Sedictious_ patch will still be useful for other systems (and old windows)
