[07:35] <fuzzie> wow, I asked for an Android log in a bug report and not only did I get one, it's actually useful.
[07:38] <fuzzie> the bad news is that the bug is in Java code, but well, alas.
[07:38] <CruX|> haha
[07:38] <fuzzie> or, rather, somewhere in the Java/C++ mix.
[07:40] --> LunaVorax joined #scummvm.
[07:41] <fuzzie> I guess the C++ code isn't freeing useless local references to the buffer.
[07:42] <fuzzie> And thus a silly engine which tries opening kyra.dat hundreds of times in a single frame causes it to explode, not naming any engines.
[07:43] <fuzzie> Although maybe actually it's just opening hundreds of files, hm. Who knows. Happy Java reference time anyway.
[08:02] <edheldil> well, Darkseed opens and reads in TOSTEXT.BIN (strings file) each time it prints a message

[08:34] <wjp> hi
[08:42] <Strangerke> Does someone have time, Hopkins FBI, and Valgrind?
[08:47] <Strangerke> .... Does someone have time and Valgrind, maybe?
[08:48] <CruX|> i have but don't have hopkins
[08:49] <Strangerke> CruX|: Good
[08:49] <Strangerke> CruX|: https://sourceforge.net/projects/scummvm/files/extras/Hopkins%20FBI/hopkins-linux-en.zip/download
[08:49] <Strangerke> that's the linux demo
[08:49] <CruX|> ok
[08:50] <CruX|> recompiling scummvm
[08:51] <CruX|> done
[08:51] <Strangerke> I'd like to test this error: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3611824&group_id=37116&atid=418820
[08:52] <Strangerke> When you load a game from the launcher, then discuss with the punk, the music is stopped
[08:52] <CruX|> ok
[08:53] <Strangerke> I suspect an uninitialized variable... or a bad default value
[08:53] <Strangerke> so I hope it's uninitialized ;)
[08:53] <Strangerke> Could you try that?
[08:53] <CruX|> yes but i am at work and dont have headphones :(
[08:53] <Strangerke> It works in any screen... So if you save in the first room, load it and search the sofa, you should have the same behavior
[08:54] <Strangerke> Oh.
[08:55] <Strangerke> Well... It's failing consistantly... so if you cut the sound at OS level, it should still show the uninitialized variable... Or maybe you're on an open space and running the game isn't an option at all?
[08:55] <CruX|> i'll try
[08:56] <-- LunaVorax left irc: Ping timeout: 256 seconds
[08:57] <Strangerke> Cool, thanks :)
[08:58] <CruX|> Strangerke: btw it can't be reproduced on your environment ?
[09:00] <Strangerke> Now I understood the bug, I can reproduce it
[09:00] <Strangerke> But in my brain fog yesterday, I wasn't able to spot the problem :)
[09:01] <Strangerke> So... I expected that Valgrind could eventually show me the light
[09:02] <CruX|> well i exited the game but scummvm is doing something - it is stuck
[09:02] <CruX|> and I have lot of ALSA lib pcm.c:7339:(snd_pcm_recover) underrun occurred messagges
[09:03] <Strangerke> ok, thanks
[09:03] <-- _marc` left irc: Quit: _marc`
[09:07] <CruX|> i am stuck at 0x00000000011be2f1 in Engine::shouldQuit () at engines/engine.cpp:563
[09:08] <CruX|> this is probably returning false return (eventMan->shouldQuit() || eventMan->shouldRTL())
[09:09] <Strangerke> ok, I'll have to check that, thanks
[09:10] <Strangerke> but nothing about an uninitialized variable at some point before, right?
[09:10] <CruX|> nothing yed because i didn't get any valgrind output because game was stuck
[09:11] <CruX|> _globals->_exitId = -1 in my case
[09:11] <CruX|> i'll recompile everything from scratch and then let you know
[09:12] <Strangerke> thanks
[09:13] <wjp> valgrind gives output on uninitialized vars immediately when it happens
[09:14] <CruX|> wjp: with what parameter ?
[09:14] <wjp> default
[09:14] <CruX|> hmm baybe i should turn off optimization
[09:15] <-- James|GlideM left irc: Read error: Connection reset by peer
[09:15] <CruX|> recompiling with only ./configure --enable-all-engines
[09:16] <wjp> instead of?
[09:16] <Strangerke> For info, I moved the demos to https://sourceforge.net/projects/scummvm/files/demos/hopkins/
[09:18] <CruX|> instead of ./configure --enable-all-engines --enable-release --enable-optimizations
[09:21] <CruX|> same problem with recompiled version
[09:22] <Strangerke> How do you quit, btw?
[09:22] <CruX|> via menu
[09:23] <CruX|> options->quit game
[09:23] <Strangerke> ok, thanks
[09:23] <CruX|> then i'm back in main menu and there is quit button
[09:24] <CruX|> when i click it there is info screen about first linux game
[09:24] <CruX|> then I click anywhere and screen fade to black and game is stuck
[09:25] <Strangerke> ok, that sounds specific to the Linux demo. Thanks :)
[09:25] <Strangerke> As you may imagine, I never use it :)
[09:27] <wjp> uh, why?
[09:27] <Strangerke> wjp: Maybe because I have the full versions?
[09:27] <wjp> isn't it a version you're aiming to support?
[09:27] <Strangerke> yes, I should use them too :P
[09:28] <Strangerke> Those versions are butchered, so it's less fun to play them when you have the original too
[09:28] <Strangerke> (particularly the Win95 EN version)
[09:28] <wjp> I wouldn't have much trouble with not supporting all demos, but that should be made clear then
[09:29] <Strangerke> All the hardcoded logic is there, it's using the same engine... I see no good reason not to support them
[09:29] <CruX|> btw no info i valgring about unintialized variables during gameplay
[09:29] <CruX|> *in
[09:30] <Strangerke> CruX|: ok thanks... Then most likely I properly initialized the variable with a wrong default value :/
[09:31] <CruX|> but i'm not sure if valgrind print this info by default
[09:31] <CruX|> i'll make small test
[09:31] <wjp> it does
[09:31] <Strangerke> no worries, I'll find this evening
[09:32] Nick change: _sev|work__ -> _sev|work
[09:32] <Strangerke> Some bugs, like the pathfinding issue, will require more debugging I'm sure :/
[09:33] <CruX|> ah it dows your're right
[09:33] <CruX|> nice

[09:35] <wjp> sometimes these coverity bug-fix runs scare me because they feel like they may have been done on auto-pilot

[09:45] <CruX|> because now scumm exited normaly (maybe it has something with io redirection)
[09:45] <Strangerke> Not under Windoze
[09:45] <CruX|> ah ok

[09:46] <CruX|> Strangerke: and can't you use virtual machine ?
[09:46] <Strangerke> I could, indeed... Or dual boot my laptop...
[09:47] <CruX|> btw valgrind shows nothing about unitialized var. only possibly lost in loss record 0x409C76: OSystem_POSIX::createLogFile() (posix.cpp:156)
[09:47] <CruX|> but that's imho normal

[13:55] <fuzzie> wjp: expired?
[13:57] <wjp> yes
[13:57] <wjp> the forum thread digitall linked to in that linux/arm crash report
[13:59] <fuzzie> could it be an ABI issue with the optimised ARM?
[14:01] <wjp> I haven't looked in detail at them yet, but bug report or forum thread?
[14:01] <fuzzie> The bug report. It's hardfloat armv7. I couldn't work out if e.g. the hf abi was actually different.
[14:06] <wjp> hm, confusing. The original crash is in scale3x and then he uses -g3x ?
[14:06] <fuzzie> I assume that's just coincidence of some kind.
[14:07] <fuzzie> Which is why I asked for the 1x attempt.

[14:35] <t0by> (As in: transparent)
[14:37] <-- Tomaz^W left irc: Ping timeout: 255 seconds
[14:39] <fuzzie> Because we have hand-coded asm.
[14:42] <t0by> :o
[14:42] <fuzzie> also because compilers are the worst things ever and must never be trusted, mind
[14:43] <-- _sev|work left irc: Quit: This computer has gone to sleep
[14:45] Action: wjp also grumbles at having missed that plugins table in the neverhood svn conversion
[14:45] <wjp> now I get to do it again, yay!
[14:46] <wjp> although I suppose with a little grafting that won't be too painful
[14:46] <wjp> I wish I trusted git-rebase -p
[14:46] <fuzzie> crouton doesn't seem to install any evil variant of gcc though, and ubuntu's gcc 4.6 should be fine.
[14:49] <t0by> Really? I remember my comp arch exam having a question that sounded like "Thou shalt not write asm for RISC architectures unless absolutely necessary, especially MIPS, for RISC is built around the compiler and not the other way around, and optimizing compilers are a thousand times more awesome than you puny fleshling will ever be, amen. True or False?" and the answer was "true".
[14:49] <t0by> Real life creeping in. Damn!
[14:50] <fuzzie> as opposed to CISC architectures, where hand-coded asm gets excellent results compared to compilers? :P
[14:50] <fuzzie> (hint: really, really not)
[14:51] <t0by> Well, neither, but you get what I mean :P
[14:51] <fuzzie> It's quite possible that our ARM code doesn't do too optimally on modern designs, I don't know.
[14:51] <fuzzie> But it's intended for things like the 66mhz ARM9 in the Nintendo DS where you really can't just trust the compiler to do the right thing.
[14:52] <wjp> it can also help in cases where you know more than the compiler
[14:52] <fuzzie> And we have the god of optimised ARM assembler writing the code, so. :P
[14:53] <fuzzie> but, yes, it's a last-ditch thing when you have proof in the form of a profile, obviously
[14:54] <wjp> ok, so 1x also crashes
[14:54] <fuzzie> damn
[14:54] <wjp> I wonder if --disable-nasm actually disabled arm asm
[14:55] <fuzzie> should it..?
[14:55] <wjp> I have no idea
[14:55] <fuzzie> that sounds pretty crazy
[14:56] <wjp> I have been known to think crazy things from time to time
[14:56] <wjp> yes, ARM asm seems unrelated to --disable-nasm
[14:57] <fuzzie> but it shouldn't matter with 1x scaler
[14:57] <fuzzie> the other ARM thing is the audio?
[14:57] <fuzzie> oh how I don't love this code
[14:57] <wjp> yes, and some SCUMM code
[14:57] <clone2727> configure says scaler, mixer, smush, "gfx" and costume
[14:58] <clone2727> guess that's SCUMM graphics too :P
[14:58] <fuzzie> USE_ARM_SOUND_ASM
[14:58] <fuzzie> it's kind of weird that valgrind doesn't pick up on any random corruption though
[14:59] <wjp> audio becomes an option when it crashes on game startup, I suppose
[15:00] <fuzzie> but the audio code is certainly calling back into the C++ which could be fun
[15:00] <fuzzie> so, maybe we need something to disable ARM asm..
[15:00] <wjp> I was just about to say

[20:39] <Strangerke> wjp: Because clone2727 told me it's the way it should be (tm)
[20:39] <clone2727> wjp: He had then as "open" and "fixed" but was waiting for a response from the user to confirm it's fixed
[20:41] <DrMcCoy> Humble Double Fine Bundle: https://www.humblebundle.com/ :)
[20:41] <wjp> is there really uncertainty if those are fixed?
[20:42] <Strangerke> I don't like to close bugs before the user confirms it's fixed
[20:42] <wjp> if so, you should explicitly ask for confirmation, I think. If not, just close them

[20:46] <somaen> DF Humble Bundle means all the games for Linux/Mac too, but they're still not available that way on Steam
[20:46] <DrMcCoy> Yeah
[20:46] <DrMcCoy> "Note: Steam version initially for Windows and Mac. Linux Steam version is incoming."
[20:46] <fuzzie> i hear there is yet another psychonauts build
[20:46] <fuzzie> maybe it'll be perfect by the time I get around to playing it.
[20:46] <DrMcCoy> lol

[20:50] <SylvainTV> indeed
[20:50] <clone2727> SylvainTV: Fine. Same question to you then!
[20:50] <SylvainTV> nah was just trying to reconfort DrMcCoy !
[20:50] <fuzzie> DrMcCoy: GOB3 ERROR!
[20:50] <SylvainTV> actually i had made some progress with the special vmd stuff
[20:50] <SylvainTV> but I don't dare commiting it
[20:51] <SylvainTV> as it's like dirty
[20:51] <Strangerke> SylvainTV: didnt you have also the space displayed properly in the space shooter?
[20:51] <SylvainTV> well yes
[20:51] <SylvainTV> but thaat was long ago

[21:10] <nutron|w> Strangerke: indeed =)
[21:11] <Strangerke> Cool :)
[21:11] <Strangerke> Sfinx is coming :)
[21:11] <somaen> And well, I guess it's bad form to gift away all the other games?
[21:11] <nutron|w> Strangerke: I'll be back in 10 nature calls =(
[21:11] <Strangerke> 10 nature calls... You have to piss 10 times? 0_o
[21:11] <eriktorbjorn> Speaking of Polish games, I think we have some bug reports about the Polish version of The Feeble Files, if anyone has that. :-)
[21:12] <Strangerke> nutron: that sounds like a prostate issue, if you want my opinion
[21:12] <Strangerke> eriktorbjorn: ... Not, sorry, I don't have this one
[21:12] <somaen> Funnily enough I actually even already have Psychonauts on Humble Bundle
[21:13] <DrMcCoy> Ditto :P

[21:14] <somaen> not that I care too much, but seems the localized versions are steam-only for the other games.
[21:20] <MonkeyJamboree> i own everything on the humble bundle but that renamed new adventure game
[21:20] <MonkeyJamboree> all on steam
[21:20] <MonkeyJamboree> so meh
[21:22] <somaen> Well, atleast I won't have to get duplicates

[21:29] <eriktorbjorn> Annoyingly, The Feeble Files crashed for me earlier, but I can't reproduce it and trying to duplicate the circumstances in Valgrind yielded nothing.
[21:29] <eriktorbjorn> The only thing I learend is that The Feeble Files in Valgrind is quite amazingly slow.
[21:31] <DrMcCoy> Of course it is, it's valgrind
[21:32] <eriktorbjorn> DrMcCoy: Some games are playable in Valgrind.
[21:32] <DrMcCoy> Feeble Files being a 640x480 game makes it even worse
[21:33] <eriktorbjorn> Right now, I wish The Feeble File had done what two other games I have did: Include both a 320x200 version and a 640x480 version. :-)
