[01:07] --> Cutter joined #scummvm.
[01:07] <Cutter> hi
[01:09] <Cutter> I know that this is off-topic, but someone may have played Gabriel Knight here
[01:10] <Cutter> in GK, is it possible to miss something in a previous chapter and be stuck because of that?
[01:18] <DrMcCoy> Cutter: I don't think so
[01:18] <-- jackster left irc: Quit: jackster
[01:22] <Cutter> ok thx
[01:23] <digitall> Cutter: What version do you have?
[01:24] <Cutter> digitall: cd version
[01:24] <digitall> If it is the floppy version, then ..ah
[01:24] <digitall> I'd suggest Ask Grace and Read the Newspaper..
[01:25] <Cutter> ok thx
[01:25] <Cutter> what about the floppy version?
[01:25] <digitall> Oh, if you are playing under DosBox with the original engine, the floppy version is very flaky especially with OOM errors
[01:26] <digitall> at least according to some of the walkthroughs.
[01:26] <digitall> But doesn't affect later CDROM versions.
[01:27] <digitall> If you are playing through ScummVM, there may be a bug preventing game completion. SCI is not stable yet.
[01:27] <Cutter> ok
[01:27] <Cutter> I didn't even know GK ran in Scumm
[01:27] <digitall> Please let us know if you think there is a bug there compared to the original.. but don't file a formal bug. Just let one of the SCI devs know here :-)
[01:28] <digitall> Ah OK.
[01:39] <StarG> i think chapters are triggered by completion of some key events in GK
[01:39] <StarG> you can miss optional stuff.. hence the final score to solve the game might be different each time
[01:39] <StarG> just thinking about squeezing some extra bits of information here and there from some
[01:40] <StarG> i dont think you can really screw up the game
[01:42] <StarG> well you can die... but then again you can load again 8)
[01:42] <DrMcCoy> digitall: I though reading the newspaper is optional, only for points?
[01:43] <DrMcCoy> digitall: And you need to speak to Grace to advance the plot anyway
[01:43] <digitall> DrMcCoy : I have to admit I haven't played through my copy of GK1 yet :-)
[01:43] <StarG> hey DrMcCoy :)
[01:43] <digitall> I ran a grep -i stuck on the walkthrough.
[01:44] <StarG> try using UHS hints
[01:44] <digitall> then a few similar for fault etc :-)
[01:44] <DrMcCoy> StarG: Well, you can set the saves on stupid places :P. I remember one time overwriting an important save with a state where I was about to die (in the zombie labyrinth), with the save before that still in chapter one :P
[01:44] <StarG> some of them are well designed and try to summarize the problems you are actually encountering
[01:44] <digitall> Shrug. I tend to not need it usually.. But they do list some of those type of issues, so handy
[01:45] <StarG> (no idea how well the one for GK is)
[01:45] <DrMcCoy> digitall: The only bug I can remember experiencing once (with the original, ages ago), was that Bruno (the guy that buys the painting) didn't appear, no matter what I tried
[01:45] <StarG> i really enjoy using hints.... i hate walkthroughs... they offer me much more than i usually want... and im tempted to read on
[01:46] <StarG> DrMcCoy> uhhhh thats bad, how did you rescued your progress?
[01:46] <StarG> (for that reason and because of sad experience with xcom1 saves i usually rotate save game slots... e.g. use like 3 of them )
[01:47] <DrMcCoy> StarG: I bit the bullet and started again. After ignoring the game for a year :P
[01:48] <StarG> X.X
[01:48] <DrMcCoy> StarG: But that taught me to save early, save often and use new save slots frequently :P
[01:48] <LordHoto> DrMcCoy: you should play Kyrandia 1 then ;-P
[01:50] <DrMcCoy> LordHoto: I did play that. Got through that stupid labyrinth after what felt like years, while I was playing on my laptop. Went home shortly after that and when I wanted to rsync the saves back to my desktop, I accidently did it the other way round (i.e. rsync the stuff on my desktop to my laptop), with --delete-after
[01:51] <LordHoto> DrMcCoy: you fail
[01:51] <DrMcCoy> Yes. I do. Hard.
[01:51] <LordHoto> :-)
[01:51] <LordHoto> anyway so you can enjoy playing through the labyrinth again
[01:51] <DrMcCoy> Never.
[01:51] <LordHoto> I might so too this week, when I find time to play Kyrandia 1 Amiga for release testing ;-P
[01:51] <DrMcCoy> I hate, hate, /hate/ labyrinths
[01:52] <StarG> hmm reverse backup :)
[01:52] <LordHoto> :-)
[01:52] <LordHoto> the one in kyra is quite easy though, just drop fireberries
[01:52] <LordHoto> ;-P
[01:52] <DrMcCoy> ...
[01:52] <DrMcCoy> Easy...
[01:52] <DrMcCoy> I nearly killed me
[01:53] <DrMcCoy> Err
[01:53] <DrMcCoy> It*
[01:53] <DrMcCoy> It nearly killed me
[01:53] <LordHoto> so you didn't die like 50 times because of it? ;-P
[01:53] <DrMcCoy> It nearly killed /me/, DrMcCoy
[01:54] <LordHoto> :-)
[01:54] <LordHoto> you're weak!
[01:54] <DrMcCoy> ...
[01:54] <DrMcCoy> Kyrandia is evil. Pure evil.
[01:55] <LordHoto> not as evil as gob ;-P
[01:55] <LordHoto> or should I say dev? :-P
[01:55] Action: StarG admits to own Kyra3 but never played through
[01:55] <DrMcCoy> Quite the contrary
[01:55] <DrMcCoy> Kyrandia is worse than DEV
[01:55] <StarG> Hey Gob1 wasnt that hard :)
[01:55] <LordHoto> you're just weak :-)
[01:55] <DrMcCoy> StarG: I'm not talking about the games :P
[01:55] <StarG> oh i see
[01:55] <DrMcCoy> The Kyrandia games are worse than the DEV code :P
[01:56] <LordHoto> never :-)
[01:56] <DrMcCoy> Oh, yes!
[01:56] <StarG> You should know.. wasnt it you that made the big efforts in gob?
[01:57] <DrMcCoy> Yeah
[01:58] <StarG> oh btw whats the DEV code :)
[01:58] <StarG> is there a vault where sane persons never should look into?
[01:59] <DrMcCoy> Hmm?
[01:59] <LordHoto> StarG: the goblins engine code
[01:59] <LordHoto> StarG: the engine is called DEV
[01:59] <LordHoto> StarG: (i.e. the original engine)
[01:59] <StarG> ahhhhh
[01:59] <DrMcCoy> Which should tell you enough already :P
[01:59] <LordHoto> :-D
[01:59] <StarG> *evilgrin*
[01:59] <StarG> reminds me about the article of the development of GK3
[02:00] <StarG> it was quite insightful about game development in big teams...
[02:00] <StarG> the short summary of it was...
[02:00] <DrMcCoy> Don't remind me about GK3
[02:00] <DrMcCoy> Cat hair mustache...
[02:00] <StarG> uhm.. to be honest.. i havent played it through
[02:01] <DrMcCoy> Me neither
[02:01] <StarG> i stuck when it was to enter the evil dark lair
[02:01] <DrMcCoy> It's quite early in the gamer
[02:01] <DrMcCoy> game*
[02:01] <StarG> the atmosphere was so dense... and i seen a screenshot of some horror on some page earlier... i just couldnt enter that cave :|
[02:01] <DrMcCoy> You have to disguise yourself as Mosley. A guy without a mustache. By making a fake mustache. Out of cat hair and syrup
[02:02] <StarG> ahhh that
[02:02] <StarG> really... that was evil
[02:02] <StarG> i nearly got insane at that point
[02:02] <DrMcCoy> :P
[02:02] <StarG> think to rob the id was understandable
[02:03] <StarG> the jacket.. ok
[02:03] <StarG> but the beard... i failed that
[02:03] <DrMcCoy> :P
[02:04] <StarG> game developers should be forced to have their relatives to play the game
[02:04] <StarG> *without* allowing them to give hints
[02:04] <DrMcCoy> :P
[02:04] <LordHoto> engine developers should be forced to test games for release testing ;-P
[02:05] <DrMcCoy> :(
[02:05] <StarG> hey i have quite a few adventures in my "not-completed" or "not-even-touched" list....
[02:05] <StarG> i can always have a look into
[02:06] <StarG> (currently playing discworld I )
[02:06] <LordHoto> aha
[02:06] <StarG> i tend to discover more bugs than i usually like
[02:07] <StarG> for myself at least
[02:07] <StarG> at least ill proclaim that without proof...
[02:10] <StarG> i not sure what lordhoto wanted to point to but so far my memories was that gobliins was running quite good (cant tell for gob1/gob3)

[11:42] <DV> :)
[11:42] <wjp> right now the mentoring organization sign-up hasn't even started yet, though :-)
[11:42] <Strangerke> you can of course send a mail to -devel, but I also can give you their mails
[11:43] <DV> thanks
[11:43] <DV> i know the application period hasn't started
[11:43] <DV> but i guess for complete success and proper selection
[11:43] <DV> it would be nice if i get beforeheand in touch
[11:43] <DV> and prove my worth or atleast passion and zeal to work
[11:44] <Strangerke> wow :)

[23:45] <StarG_> feeling a bit bored...
[23:45] <StarG_> anyone has a small time frame project for me ;D
[23:45] <WilliamC> It's better than what I'm feeling.
[23:46] <WilliamC> You could try to compile Firefox.
[23:46] <StarG_> more scumm related id would like :D
[23:46] <StarG_> so firefox is a arse to compile?
[23:46] <WilliamC> Depends on what you're trying to do with it.
[23:47] <-- WooShell left irc:
[23:47] <StarG_> if its coming to stripping down memory usage it would be a hero's deed :D
[23:48] <WilliamC> I tried hacking it to use VS 2010 and it failed.
[23:48] <StarG_> but i have the remote feeling that some external object (pronounce: flash) manangment would need to be redone or at least have an audit
[23:48] <WilliamC> You could have it use profile guided compilation.
[23:49] <StarG_> but what would be used for runtime profiling?
[23:49] <StarG_> VS2010.. quite early i'd say
[23:50] <StarG_> wasnt it scheduled to be released in first half of the year?
[23:51] <StarG_> guess youre using a release candidate... but it seems to bring up more issues than it offers in new features
[23:52] <WilliamC> Yeah, I downloaded 2008 edition, I should probably download that and try again
[23:52] <WilliamC> errr
[23:52] <WilliamC> install
[23:52] <StarG_> i guess
[23:52] <WilliamC> I like to see how small I can make it.
[23:53] <StarG_> those express editions feel a bit crappy however... some things do not work as expected.. like the deactivated "create library" project
[23:53] <WilliamC> But when you do that they make you use the Minefield icon
[23:53] <WilliamC> StarG_, I think they intentionally make it a pain to use so you feel like buying the full version
[23:53] <StarG_> (which can be reactivated by modifying some html configs)
[23:54] <StarG_> could be the case yes... why crippling it... if you're professional you will buy it anyways
[23:54] <StarG_> (or the company you work for will do it)
[23:55] <WilliamC> I used to program but I cannot pass Calc 2.
[23:55] <StarG_> what do you mean?
[23:55] <WilliamC> I took Computer Science but I suck at math
[23:56] <StarG_> ahh
[23:56] <StarG_> dont worry.. same here :D
[23:56] <WilliamC> So I changed majors
[23:56] <WilliamC> I'm a wiz at history but that doesn't really help you
[23:57] <WilliamC> History and politics was my dad's thing so I just kinda picked it up by osmosis.:P
[23:57] <StarG_> i guess then im a philosophers in the same variant :)
[23:58] <StarG_> im not uninclined by history... actually i love to get to know of the past
[23:59] <StarG_> as it usually offers insight of what to expect of the future
[23:59] <WilliamC> My father did the CIvil War round table and re-enactment.
[23:59] <WilliamC> I did re-enactment a few times too, I helped with the cannon.
[23:59] <-- ST left irc: Quit: Leaving.
[23:59] <WilliamC> It was neat.
[23:59] Action: StarG_ is getting a dictionary :D
[23:59] <WilliamC> For what?
